Both those last two things most likely. NYC is an interesting place for socializing from talking to everyone I know that's lived there. It's a busy city and can be difficult to make connections with people since it's such a crowded, busy place.

Delving into economics adds a much more complicated spin to everything, especially in America where it becomes the basis of politics as well. Profit should not be the main motivator for anything when it comes at the expense of the welfare of the people. There are too many negative externalities that come into play and end up having those in power trample on the less fortunate to keep the silver spoon in their mouth. Not all value is tangible enough to be represented in dollar signs.

Looking at things as a scale to balance generates an us vs them mentality which is the biggest weakness of current gender talks. Recognizing biases and approaching it from the viewpoint that each gender faces different issues is the best first step to dealing with them without feeling like the other gender has to be worse off for the other to be bettered. Hating men or women isn't constructive.

Statistics for something as abstract as "violence" at very difficult to gather as you need to have a countrywide accepted definition, and you would have to deal with the fact that a lot of violent incidents are simply never reported. Domestic violence statistics are equally unreliable as the majority of domestic violence incidents towards both genders likely aren't reported, with men likely being even more under represented since men would be less likely to report it due to societal pressure.

The largest 150 cities only makes up around 71 million people as of the 2012 census, when the US population was 314 million. So only ~23% of the population is in the 150 cities verse the fact that 80% (2010 census) of the population lives in an urban setting, which is a number that is only growing.

Looking at recent gender representation at colleges women have been generating more degrees than men for at least the last couple years, so it would make sense that more women would be hired to positions requiring a degree simply because there are more of them entering the workforce. This is obviously a very over simplified explanation, but i would obviously be a contributing factor to the shifting workforce demographics found in large cities.

Gender pay gap has always been an interesting issue to me, even moreso with some of the current events we're seeing like teachers striking. Education is a rather female dominated major in college and teachers deserve higher wages because of the job they do rather than the fact that they tend to be women. The pay gap should be made into a critique on what services society values rather than a gender related issue.

They did a study a while back about suicide claims by gender and found that men viewed suicide as the final solution, and claims that they were going to do it were usually backed by actual intent. For women suicide is used as a call for help and often is not done with the intent of actually succeeding.
