This isn't an issue of policing violence it's an issue of policing imaginative play. No one here would argue that it would be ok for these children to go around hitting or throwing things at each other, but we're talking about play violence, which is a fundamental part of every society I've ever been exposed to (sports anyone?). Targeting any sort of potentially violent expression as being the equivalent to actual violence is the issue here and that's where it tends to severely effect boys in gr…

The "well done" could be read that way... like patting a puppy on top of it's head when it manages to return a thrown ball. I don't see it that way, but I can see how others might.

Did anyone else feel that this article was far too heavy on the rhetoric and far to skimpy on the facts? This is not to say that I disagree that the issues he was discussing don't exist and aren't very serious, but I found many of the ways he framed them to be overly politically charged and little more than a collection of anger-inducing buzzwords. These are real issues that need to be made part of the public consciousness, and I'm glad that people are talking about them more. However, it seems …

I actually didn't do it because it was emotionally problematic. I did it because my lived experience informs me otherwise. I never once told him he was wrong for having those feelings, or that he hurt my feelings by saying such a thing, I was just trying to politely call him out on the over-generalization. Is it my use of the word "appreciate" that caused the miscommunication? I assure you my "feelings" were of little consequence in this matter other than as a minor motivational factor to actual…

I appreciate that, and I agree. I should have expressed myself more thoroughly at first instead of phrasing it the way I did. I think I did it better later on in the discussion I had with him. I certainly did not intend to "emotionally bully" him, but I see how it could be taken that way. Thanks for the critique!

They're not. His feelings about his experiences are completely valid and important. My issue is with taking his expression of opinion/experiences and stating it as emphatic all encompassing fact. My wording in this instance was a matter of trying to politely express my point, which I think I made more explicitly and clearly later on in the discussion. I had no intention of prioritizing my feelings over his or my experiences over his. If he had not emphasized "ALL women" the way he had, I would h…

Neither of your links insisted that they were in the majority. One of them said the LEVELS of narcissism had risen over 67% but did not give percentages of narcissists vs non-narcissists. For example, if there was previously 1 narcissistic woman in 100 and now there are 2, that is a 100% increase in the levels of narcissism but it hardly makes the narcissistic the majority (obviously ridiculous numbers, but I used them to make a point). The second only had a single instance of selfish acts being…

I find it interesting that you equate: "a rise in narcissism" and a discussion in the numbers of women who perform selfish acts that are predominantly reported as under than 50% as the defining behaviours of "ALL women." I will certainly admit that there is a large percentage of selfish females out there, and there are more of them cropping up daily, but that hardly justifies your blanket statement. Call it a trending generalization, call it your anecdotal experience, call it a worrying level of…

I'd love to see a pic of a "drooling boot." I think that would be hysterical. ;-) On the other hand, I know that exact mentality you're talking about. In my teen years it was when "Boys suck, throw rocks at them!" began to appear on T-shirts and buttons. But I always liked the elementary school chant: "Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider, but girls go to Mars to get more candy bars!" Too bad I took that last part too much to heart... sigh

I'm really sorry that that has been your experience. However, as a woman who has grinned and bore it from a lot of people over a long period of time and a wife who does a lot for her husband as a loving partner, I would also really appreciate it if you did not use ridiculous blanket statements with such emphasis.

I think that this was a grammatical error on his part: For the most part, I can't think of any important way that white Americans are worse off than African Americans. Or First Nations people worse off than white Canadians. I'm pretty sure he meant to flip that around so that it was an equal comparison with the white Americans. "White vs Black & White vs First Nations"... linguistically that would make more sense.

I don't have quick access to the links but I have been reading up on this lately and you may be surprised how often there are female guards sexually abusing male prisoners. Especially in juvenile detention facilities. This isn't to say that there aren't a large number of instances of male on male rape, but the idea that men are the only ones who rape is utter nonsense.

I'm not sure why you're being down voted as I really think this is an excellent question! What, for me, it really comes down to is that children do far better in familial situations with a variety of influences. There should be strong relationships encouraged with role-models of both genders and the more people who are actively involved in the child's life the better! While that may wind up being politically-conveniently boiled down into "hetero couples are better than homo ones," that is a gros…

Thirded. Although I truly believe that everyone should watch the original footage from this event, in order to draw their own conclusions (which might be somewhere in the ballpark of where this blatant propaganda is aiming), this particular video is very close to the sort of thing that /MR and the MRM in general have been accused of in the main stream media. This is unworthy of a movement that prides itself on fair play and rationality. If we do this, if we make this sort of thing our MO there i…

Just curious, but do you have any evidence at all that this woman has any sort of communicable ailment? If not, then why would you even bring this up? I am in no way saying that she wasn't 100% wrong for doing what she did. Also, I do realize that the police officer has absolutely no way of knowing if she does have any diseases, and should probably be tested (as should anyone who comes into accidental contact with bodily fluids of unknown or suspect persons), but why make the statement that she …

Wow, there's a strawman and derailment all in one. The issue is not the potential validity of new words, the issue is the necessity or appropriateness of that single word. We should be trying to behave as reasonable adults, not making up and slinging childish insults.

How interesting that if "it wasn't the women who sent their husbands off to war in this case" that somehow makes this not a men's rights situation? Who ever said that the only people capable of creating or dismissing men's issues are women? The issue is how these men are perceived on a larger scale. The wording of the text makes it seem like the only victims of these acts are women, and that they are being targeted by men. Even more importantly, that the real tragedy of this whole situation is t…

It depends on where you live. Here in BC (Canada) there have been bars held liable for what people did AFTER they were taken safely home in a cab... they decided to drink more at home and then left home and got injured. The bar was found liable. It's total crap!

Of course it will, for a time at least. But I thought we were in for the long haul? The more they do their best to blend the truth with their ideology and warp them both in the interim, the more they undermine their own position. Yes it may spawn more specious studies, but I genuinely believe that the more of those they create the more they wind up proving our point for us.

Just because the fempire isn't keen on it, doesn't mean that the study isn't worth doing. The more sincere data that is collected the better. Studies that are done avoiding bias and using truly scientific mechanisms (or at least as close as we can get when dealing with human society) are always useful, regardless of widespread acceptance. Drown the dogma in data and eventually you'll get somewhere. Just because it doesn't get immediate acceptance or media attention does not mean that it won't pr…

I'm a frequent reader of both, and I have to say that in my experience the two subs agree far more frequently than they disagree. And on a very broad range of topics. In a lot of ways they are trying to accomplish the same thing from two different perspectives. 2X seems to be filled with the generally feminist-leaning-egalitarianism (yep, I made that up on the spot) which seeks to meet men on their own terms instead of simply labelling them the enemy or trying to make them into subservient being…

Absolutely! I couldn't agree with you more. And I'm fairly sure that most MRA's would be in complete agreement with you. I'm not saying that you have misapplied the term personally, but I have certainly seen and heard of people who have. The truly unfortunate thing is when it is blanket applied to any male who pays any undesired attention to women regardless of context or manners. The unattractive, socially awkward or even just the guy on the street who may be quietly admiring the way your cloth…

Sure, in that context. The problem is that, much like bitch or slut, it gets indiscriminately applied and used to infer negative intention on the part of the "creep" regardless of actual actions. I honestly would be surprised if anyone other than the creep who was following you and shouting profanities would have a problem with you calling them such. And at that point, who cares what obviously unstable people think?

When its used as a blanket term to justify discriminatory or overly punitive actions, or as a way of derailing all possible discussion on a subject sure. The feeling of being offended is not the issue; it's using it as a blunt weapon to silence others that is problematic. It doesn't matter if you're offended if you can't come up with a reason as to why what was said is offensive and use that as the starting point for a discussion instead of the end of one.
/r/MensRights06/11/13 05:50 AM

I think the biggest reason that this quote speaks to the MRM is that many people seem to use "I'm offended by that" as a way to terminate all discussion on the subject. I don't think that the majority of people here would believe that this quote was advocating carte blanche on being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole. Of course, I can really only speak for myself, but that is my understanding of how this would be applied here.

"Pedos" are only interested in prepubescents. This is an obvious sexual deviation as they are not viable sexual partners. Those girls were post-pubescent and fully physically capable of normal sexual intercourse and reproduction. It is not "sick" to feel sexual attraction to (more-or-less) sexually mature people. Heck, for most of recorded history those girls would have been considered marriageable and would possibly have had children of their own. I personally don't really like it, but I am als…

There is a huge difference between advancing Men's Rights and claiming that half of the human race is nothing more than dead weight. I totally agree that the significant issues that boys face in schools and the bias of trying to artificially inflate the number of women in certain positions are serious concerns, but that is in no way addressed by the bigoted view point expressed by this "initiative."

Agreed. Though I also agree with the idea that he's a little crude at times. He expresses himself very well, but he does cross over the line of taste here and there. I wish he was a little more circumspect in his broad generalizations about women, particularly black women, who receive child support. He redeems himself though as he details the sins of the "Child Support Ho," but I wish he did not begin with such broad and unnecessarily (potentially) insulting statements. While I agree that his an…

This is not a good thing. In fact this is a big giant warning flag that you may want to re-think your relationship with this person. There is nothing wrong with bringing emotion into these issues, as long as it is recognized as emotion and not as "fact." Logic is not the be-all and end-all either. A well tempered combination of the two is what should be aimed for. Cutting ourselves off from half of our abilities of perception is a silly thing to do. But the important point here is that we can use BOTH of them, just make sure that they are seen for what they are. Frustration and anger can be powerful, as can love, but they all…

It's often to make trans and intersex people more comfortable, so they don't have to choose from a binary. It has nothing to do with the idea that men can actually keep their hands to themselves in such situations. Think about how many Anti-violence campaigns there are which focus exclusively on violence by men against women and children. Many of these also attempt to put the entire responsibility for fixing these problems on men, completely ignoring that men are nearly as often victims of domestic violence, and that women are more likely to commit acts of violence against children than men are. The issue is that there is NO GOOD REASON to make laws like this which are gender exclusive. Violence affects ev…

Part of the issue is that in order to "get our message out there" we have to de-construct the feminist-ideologically driven "facts" that have been drilled into the collective consciousness of society as a whole. While I agree that it would be lovely if there was less "feminism bashing" for the sake of cheap moments of feeling good for bashing back, the fact remains that in many fields where men's rights are being taken away, those who are leading the charge ARE feminists, or have a clearly femal…

They brought him up as an explanation for a sudden change in her financial situation which made doing porn seem like the solution. Personally, I dislike the use of the word "abandon" and if they had said "break-up" or even that he "left" her it would have made their point just as well. Though any break up can just as easily be described as abandonment, it is the emotional connotations that we attach to that word which causes my issue with its use here.

I too have an issue with her lawyer's use of the word abandoned, but other than trying to gain sympathy for her decision to do porn, it was really not in any way the point of the article. (Yes, I realize the writer did not give a direct quote, but he did give an indirect one, and that really sounds lawyer-y to me.) Absolutely, but again, this is a perversion and is what needs to be corrected. I've had similar experiences bringing up male issues in certain gender studies classes. This, IMHO, is exactly the where the evolution of feminist theory and gender studies would ideally take us. Unfortunately it's currently been hijacked by power-hungry fanatics who enjoy the privileged position of the newly empowered "victim" and use it to to demand punishment from the former "oppressors." For some odd reason, most modern approaches to feminism feel very much to me like the creation and enforcement of the Treaty of Versailles. The "evil oppressors" have been defeated, so there's …

Of course feminist theory should not be used to discriminate against men! The same way that the MRM should not use Men's Right's issues to discriminate against women. But realizing that the theory originated as one of the first real attempts to push for women's rights explains why it is gender specific and looking to change the world around it. The problem is that too many get caught up in the search for discrimination and subjugation that they perceive it everywhere and in everything and thus b…

and if radical feminists advocate gender supremacy, then feminism isn't really about equality. To me this is like saying that because there are some people who self-identify as MRA's who are blanket misogynists means that the Men's Rights Movement isn't about equality either. Otherwise, I more or less agree with you. My understanding of feminism...the sort I actually have respect for...is academic and historic. It was all about identifying systemic inequalities and attempting to negate them. It …

I agree! Although I could have a long rant about the semantic reality of 'patriarchy', I completely agree that the myth of "pervasive male privilege" is complete nonsense in the contemporary Western world. I would like to say that not all of the "feminism" taught in Universities is that sort of dogmatic "men are the enemy" nonsense. (Although I know that there is a frightening number of courses and programs that do "teach" that.)

Part of the issue is that "feminist" is actually a very broad term. Think of it like saying "Christian" rather than "Protestant, Calvinist, Unitarian, Catholic" etc. Academically speaking (where the term "feminist" originated) feminism is an approach to looking at the world in order to locate underlying systems of oppression (like stereotyping or discrimination both cultural and structural) and working to challenge them so that each person can be who they CAN be, not who/what they "SHOULD" be. Y…

It is truly a sign of social disease when people have to be more concerned about the potential negative ramifications of helping others than the potential good that comes from doing so. I applaud anyone and everyone who is unwilling to turn their back on the suffering of a fellow creature simply because there are so many people who have been indoctrinated with the idea that the world is a horribly frightening place filled with horrible frightening people. We need to address the systemic issues t…
