No priest is going to grant an annulment after five years, unless they're brother and sister, or one secretly has a living spouse. And even if they divorce, he CANNOT remarry until she dies. In the Church we fix things that are broken, we don't throw them away.

Young women are probably more likely to take lower-paying jobs that can lead to nice salaries. I make 40k/yr more than my spouse because I took an entry-level job and was promoted quickly. He waited to start his career until he could start his own business. But in most partnerships someone gets to have fun and someone gotta make fat stacks.

If he's working and she stays, home, I agree they have "sacrificed" equally. But realistically, if they break up she'd have to essentially completely switch "careers" - if she has no education or job training it would be very difficult to find work. As far as who stays home and who works - Personally, I'd rather work. I love to cook, and keep the house tidy, but it's not in me to be a SAHM. If a man would rather stay home and spend time with his kids, wouldn't it make sense to marry a woman who …

Thanks guys, this is all really interesting. So it's okay, or maybe preferable to you that she's financially dependent on you so she puts extra effort into the relationship? I think I get it, it just seems rather circuitous.

Not that she doesn't have responsibility, of course she does. I'm thinking a lump-sum severance, more like it. She's sacrificed work history or schooling in favor of staying home, keeping house, cooking meals and looking after the kids. So it would take an ideal women, that is, 18-22 when you met, a little longer to find gainful employment.
