The stats you cite are very misleading. I'm referring to this bit: (the WHO estimates that over 800 billion dollars are lost due to production mitigations caused by mental illness) and 'Mental illness' here is almost certainly being used in a broad and / or comprehensive sense; as in, it will include things like dementia, depression, psychosis, drug and alcohol addiction, personality disorders, and loads more. Myself, I really doubt that if one day I'm emotionally vulnerable with my wife, then i…

A strange question. I'm a man sort-of (lazily) looking for a woman. How am I supposed to compare my experience of that - looking for a good woman - with my non-existent experience of looking for a good man?

The Libet studies were - are - highly controversial, in both their methodology and interpretation. I recall a lengthy discussion on one of his studies in the journal Behavioral & Brain Sciences back in the early 80s. You're not on solid ground, IMO, relying on those studies as proof of anything.

Fascinating and timely article. Thanks for the link. 👍

I guess I'm asking bc, it might be instructive to push the boat out in that regard. It's the roles thing again: we can get comfy , too comfy in them. You opt for a totally different activity, ideally one involving lots of interaction with other people/strangers, and you'll learn more about her. Much more than you'll learn from watching TV with her, IMO. 👍

that she behaves this way because she lacks a degree of self confidence. Definitely a possibility, I'd say. Likewise with she likes me because she can’t quite suss me out Isn't it possible that how she is with people (in general, not just with you) is an act, for want of a better word? I mean, we all act out roles to some extent. So, one interpretation is that, yes, she's trying to suss you out. Out of interest, what kinds of things do you actually do together, you and her, with or without your …

Yeah, why not! Mention something positive and interesting about the night. Maybe a brief, very general question, idk: "what a fun night! You make it home okay? I'm cleaning the car 😒" That kind of msg is quite 'open' - it doesn't put demands on her to say X, y, or z, if to answer by a certain time, or stuff like that. Good luck with it! 👍

What would I objectively rate myself? If I'm rating myself, then that's subjective, not objective.

Gift-giving is a transaction, too: the gift, a giver, and a receiver.

men are the only ones who ever complaint about obesity IME, that's definitely not true. We literally never hear a woman complain about fat men. Ditto for this claim: not at all true IME (47, M, Europe).

Fair points, the-red_wonan. But the OP doesn't make an mention of it being about women only.

Yes, I hear you. Like I say, my post was all IMO and not meant as a dig at you. FWIW, I've read a bit of "proper" evolutionary theory, too, and that is pretty solid. So, I'm unconvinced by the " incoherence" charge: evolutionary theory / Evo biology = good, Evo psychology = nonsense. No incoherence or paradox there, in my view. dumb arguments based on fictional premises. For me, this is where we diverge. As in: IMO, it's not just some few idiots making bad claims. It's the stronger claim that th…

Of all the science I've read, evolutionary psychology/EP is, without doubt, the biggest load of BS. It's flawed on soooooo many levels. Forget Social Darwinism 101 and instead do Reasoning 100, especially: - the is-ought fallacy (David Hume); - the genetic fallacy. Once you get to grips with those two, you'll find that much of the EP/social Darwinism edifice collapses. Don't mean to have a go at the OP here; EP really gets on my goat - can't believe that so much BS can still be so widely accepte…
