You have a great mindset. I hope you are married and have kids. They Will be lucky.

You’re right. There was love. It is better for the child to have two parents who love each other both there in the same house. I wish I could’ve made that happen but we both made mistakes. It’s a long story. I’m certainly to blame in a big way. No cheating, but we just stopped loving each other after years of disappointments. We both decided to split and date other people and now that we have we decided there’s no going back.

You’re right. A marriage should not be like this. Unfortunately it is. I will prioritize my son but there’s no possibility of staying with my wife. She doesn’t want it either.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I’ll likely take the deal.

That’s a long and complicated story. The TLDR is that neither of us was mature enough to cultivate the relationship and we grew apart. She wanted me to provide her a life of luxury but I wanted her to build a career. Mismatched goals.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Pretty much mirrors my own. Really can’t do much without financial security.

You sure? All other replies here say that’s not the case. Note I’m only talking about alimony, not assets.

Thanks for the information. I’ll have to see for sure that it wouldn’t ruin her but I wouldn’t allow that. I care for her.

I wish i made that much! From what she tells me, she thinks receiving alimony is for people with no shame.

Thank you for sharing your story and advice. I am sorry that you have to experience abuse. That must be so frightening. I applaud the way you handled the situation and how you’ve protected your little one. They are in good hands with you. I suffered some physical abuse from my stbxw after I brought up divorce but I never filed a police report. There are texts between us post abuse wherein she admitted to it. At this point I just feel like an ATM and the love was lost long ago. If there ever was …

It’s ok to be separated physically a C year before divorce especially since we can afford it there. If I get divorced in CA I b run the risk of getting stuck here and I definitely can’t afford that…

But the divorce will happen in VA, not CA. I’ll be effed financial if it happens in CA.

16 years. I want to find somebody who doesn’t need my money. I had somebody like that once but I messed it up. Anyways, if I have to pay alimony I won’t have any money and so whoever I end up with, if anyone, won’t be in it for the money.

You’re right. We do talk. I don’t know if I’d say we are friends. When I say “amicable” I mean that we know not to have fights in front of our child but there’s no love and she just doesn’t like me. She is not always (aka never) open for difficult conversations and she is resentful and spiteful. I do hold hope that she will agree not to take too much in alimony. She’s prideful and resentful of the fact that I’ve been the primary bread winner. Maybe that will motivate her to be independent and no…

Northern VA has a high cost of living, though not as bad as the bay. The rest of VA is reasonable. I’d be in Hampton roads which has some pricey place but overall is reasonable. I know I’m going to go crazy of I have to stay in this.

From the VA code: “In determining custody, the court shall give primary consideration to the best interests of the child. The court shall consider and may award joint legal, joint physical, or sole custody, and there shall be no presumption in favor of any form of custody.”. From what I can tell it’s 50/50.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will move first if I can convince her not to file herself and get us stuck in the Bay Area. If that happens I’ll be effed. You’re right about relying on another for happiness. That’s my big mistake in life. Even though I’ve achieved plenty I feel like I always did it to make others proud, especially her. A big part of my unhappiness is not feeling comfortable being by myself. I need to work on that.

Good on you for recognizing your part in the troubles and seeking help and even achieving sobriety! That’s huge! I really hope things work for you. It’s hard to face it when you know you are responsible for losing somebody you love. I am in the same boat. It’s gut wrenching and even worse when they decide enough is enough. Don’t give up and don’t isolate yourself. Love is definitely not something I can live without.

What do you mean alone? Why would you be alone? I don’t understand your situation. Please let me know. There has to be a better way for you. Don’t waste your life friend.

Definitely staying with me even if that means I have to stay in CA.
