This is over-simplistic and philosophically vacuous. Why is it not its own entity when it's about 10 seconds from leaving the vagina? It can cry, blink, move and make noises. It also depends on the quality of the college or university that you attended, and the level of humanities courses you have taken. From my experience, people do not understand the rigor of some liberal arts disciplines unless they are actually enrolled in a liberal arts program or an honors program. Maybe your medical science degree did, but not every degree does. Every stupid program likes to lay claim to "critical thinking," but they teach absolutely nothing of the sort. If you read closely, you would notice he wrote "can." So, he's saying that one of the potential benefits is helping you become a better and more effective citizen. He never demeans or attacks the value of critical thinking as a virtue in and of itself.
