Are there any manuscripts that actually lay out the code of chivalry? Is Chretien de Troyes really a reliable source for that kind of thing? My understanding was that his works were fiction based on oral tradition, not an accurate representation of life at the time.

But the men and the women should be help accountable in the same way. The men and the women at the party should have stepped in when people started attacking the girl. And I just think that putting so much emphasis on her drunkenness prevents us from being able to have a useful dialogue about what happened. People do blame the victim. It happened in this case quite a bit. You may personally have better taste, but it does happen. I have failed to make my point, and ever time I try to clarify I fail again, apologies.

I think we are failing to understand each other. All I am saying is that making arguments that in any way include her drunkenness can and will be interpreted as blaming her, which will cause people to take your argument less seriously.

I understand your point, but let me try to be more clear. The argument you are making will only be perceived as blaming the victim. You are saying "she was drunk, it was statistically likely she would be attacked, her friends share some of the blame because they let her go into a dangerous situation." There may be some truth to that, but that argument will only draw negative attention. It won't persuade anyone, it will just make people angry, and that won't help anyone.

I see what you are saying, but using that language lays blame on the victim and the victim's friends, which hurts the case being made. I just think it would be better to say, "what about her friends, why didn't they stand up for her, why didn't they stop the guilty party", etc. Putting emphas…

Victim blaming isn't helping anyone's case. The victim being too drunk doesn't cause rape, the victim's friends allowing her to go to the party didn't cause the rape. The rapists caused the rape. I agree, though, that there must have been women around who could have stepped in on her behalf, and the article should mention that. But saying "her friends shouldn't have let her go when she was that drunk" is missing the point.

What I'm saying is that the main point of the post seemed to communicate a different message. The post was about innocent people being accused of rape and sent to prison for it. It was callous, and careless in how it dealt with prison rape, (although in an eye for an eye worldview it's more than acceptable), but your exaggurating one point and missing the focus. also, I'm not saying prison rape is at all acceptable, EVER, just that you are missing his point.

He isn't defending prison rape necessarily, It seems like a minor slip where he was saying rapists should be punished while detailing the nightmare that is prison life. The point of the post wasn't "rape people in prison, hurray", it was "lets not unnecessarily punish innocent people."
