Sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me, although I'm not past changing my mind if I were to hear a credible argument against using the word "date". If she's conservative, she's probably used to taking things slow with anyone she's planning on getting serious with. I would just make sure she know's you're interested without being too aggressive at first, lots of touching, holding hands, etc. This isn't some club girl.
