Yeah but the reader is from America, unless he stated otherwise. It's a good indication a woman is married if she's wearing her wedding band and engagement ring together, everyone knows that.

Not true at all, almost all adult women know what finger an engagement ring or wedding band should be put on. An engagement ring does have a distinct look though so you can usually tell if some one is engaged.
