I understand where you’re coming from, but context is important here. Has the whole class been “woke,” or is this just one isolated question? Honest question, don’t take this as an attack on your comment. The Romans enslaved conquered people. These slaves could potentially buy their way to freedom and in the rare event they had children, these children were not automatically slaves. This contrasts with the racially based chattel slavery we saw in America. My question: is the Roman form of enslavement morally defensible, or is it a barbaric outlier in an otherwise admirable culture?
