I like that Milo writes articles & did videos which give a more balanced view of the whole GG nonsense, but I'll never read/watch them myself because I find him & his style incredibly annoying. Everyone is entitled to their own tastes & it is having that variety of flavors which makes society so interesting.

I didn't have much of an opinion on feminism for many years, despite having several friends in Women Studies. There were obviously extremes, like any ideology, but empowerment is a good thing, right? But I was a poster on PZ Myer's blog when Elevatorgate went down and seeing how 'enlightened' feminists dictating the way men must prostrate themselves before women (lest they suffer any degree of unease) blew my mind.

As a ASoIaF reader, this irks me for two main reasons. This event took place from Jamie's perspective & the way it was written is far less damning to his character. I'd argue, given the book context, this scene wasn't intended as a rape scene, just another bit of Lannister love. In the books, there is a minor character named Pia. Its funny, I read through Infidel & Nomad several years ago, and then gave the former to a feminist friend because I thought she'd appreciate an incredibly uplifting story of a woman overcoming adversity. She never read it, but its her loss. Hirsi Ali is still a role model in my eyes, feminist or not.

Honestly, I used to consider myself somewhat of a feminist, or at least sympathetic to feminism as a movement. Then, everything changed when Rebecca Watson attacked. Elevatorgate sent me further down the rabbit hole, which I promptly ran out of once I realized it was full of shit. Dawkins is still the man.

Huh. As someone who lives in Ottawa & rides the bus fairly often, never seen any sort of harassment going on. Sometimes there is a bit of drunken stupidity on display as young adults leave the bars downtown, but I've never heard of anything more than that. Just a lot of rude people who refuse to give up their seats for elderly citizens.

I don't consider myself an MRA or a feminist. There are issues with how men are treated in society, and there are problems with how women are treated. I don't agree with 100% of the positions often associated with either side, so I take the middle ground. I'm just a humanist. Radicals on both sides piss me off. Although, to be honest, it's the Rad-Fems that have gotten under my skin recently since they've invaded the atheist blogging community.
