You are suffering from a loss of felt meaning. We get lots of messages about Purpose and I think we'd like to have one as it would offer us some kind of salve that would "fix" us. As we learn things are not so stable or might only be for a season. Other people have one, we don't feel it, we must be short or missing something. If it was easy, you'd have it. But what if it's made up? What if you can never know? If you can't know, what would ground you, what would plug you into the meanings of the …

I like running and am lucky to live next to both a good network of road and trails. I used to do lots of more action sports stuff. Trail running scratches that itch a bit, but it's not the same as the challenge of something like snowboarding or climbing. Not quite as technical or intense in the moment but it still has a bit of a mental aspect in a way. For body awareness and proprioception kettlebells are pretty good and slow yoga too. For myself the thing with running is there's so little to co…

Now those are some questions. I don't know, In terms of day to day, when I do have the feeling of giving up it might be more of an emotional reactive thing. Maybe it shows up like a big fuck it in not wanting to deal with or try with anything. An avoidance of things that may cause more emotions. It might show up as a "sour grapes" view of things like relationships and work, areas where I may be feeling a lack. Finding faults or devaluing those to lessen the impact or justify my feelings and the …

Thanks, for the response. The suicide stats are concerning and I think many of us who have gone or are going through divorce hit some pretty dark times. It's a cold understanding to have that. It's unsurprising that there is so little help in ways, maybe if you are in deep crisis but not much support and many of us don't like to ask for help. I also don't think we check in on other guys so much lost in our own concerns and might miss when someone's slipping. There's a kind of assumed competence …

I agree that there's things that can only be worked with in relationship. Your comment about lack of support and the high rate of suicide rang out to me. From your view are there things that men could do to support mental health better as a group, particularly in divorce? What seemed to work for you was finding a good relationship partner, but would there have been other support that would have helped you when you were in crisis?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
