Gaelic is a subgroup of the Celtic languages. Irish, Scottish and Manx are the Goidelic (Gaelic) branch. Welsh, Cornish and Breton are the Britonnic branch. The consonant pairing described above were attempts to make a sound that couldn’t easily be described using the Latin alphabet. These sounds over time have morphed to become more like the sounds represented by the Latin alphabet, but a trained war can hear the difference when the sounds are made by a native speaker.
