Third parties are not efficient political strategy in this voting system. If Jo Jorgensen had enough popular support to win a general election then she could have just won one of the main parties' primaries first. The fact that she didn't confirms the fact that she has no chance of winning the general election, and therefore voting for her is a waste. That's why we have primaries. The situation might be different if we had no electoral college and national ranked-choice voting, but we don't. I v…

(Slightly NSFW, features medical anatomy chart of male body) Reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance Reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance (RISUG), formerly referred to as the synthetic polymer styrene maleic anhydride (SMA), is the development name of a male contraceptive injection developed at IIT Kharagpur in India by the team of Dr. Sujoy K. Guha. RISUG works by an injection into the vas deferens, the vessel through which the sperm moves before ejaculation. RISUG is similar to …

Louis C.K.'s show Louie also did an episode where a woman sexually assaulted him and it was brushed off as NBD. And then later there's an episode where Louis C.K. powers through a woman's persistent "no"s and basically commits sexually assault himself, and it was played up as a noble and courageous act because that was actually what the woman wanted and she just didn't know it yet. Both of those episodes were very off-putting.

They will. When? Why haven't they already?

Then why don't they actually fucking legalize it already?

That just means marijuana doesn't violate any state laws in those states. It still violates federal law, in all 50 states. Federal law trumps state law and state's can't just declare something legal if the federal government says it's illegal. Don't get me wrong - I wish marijuana were legal, I think the federal law against it is fucking stupid. And I know the federal law is rarely enforced in states which have voted to legalize it. But it could be enforced if the federal government wanted it en…

No, in fact I think just the opposite. The powers-that-be would like the general population to keep unthinkingly breeding, to ensure a large supply of cheap workers. But employers also want to pay their own employees low wages right now because of simple greed, and it just so happens that a side effect of this is that many of those employees will choose to delay or forego having children due to economic pressure.

Vaselgel still has the side effect of sperm granulomas. RISUG doesn't. If I was okay with sperm granulomas then I'd just get a vasectomy.

You're exactly the kind who shouldn't have kids. I 100% agree! Don't be surprised when you wonder what the sweet hell is going on once you're north of 80 and all your living relatives and friends have died long ago. If I live that long and am still lucid at that age, I won't be surprised.

Most people will end up experiencing pains, failures and disappointments Yes, exactly! And that's not okay! Sometimes people recover from pain, overcome failures, make peace with disappointments, and go on to lead happy life afterward. Sometimes they don't! Sometimes pain is chronic, failure is impossible to overcome, and disappointment is persistent and overwhelming. I don't know whether any hypothetical child of mine would lead a happy or a miserable life. I'm making a judgement call, based on…

seeing someone like you experience the joys you did That's legitimate. If that were guaranteed and all there was to it, then I'd be on board for having children. I'm more worried about the potential downside, though: seeing someone I like experience the pains, failures and disappointments I did. Or pains, failures and disappointments that are entirely their own. If I felt very confident that any hypothetical children I might have would experience overall happy lives, and if I felt confident that…

How would my having a child help any of that? How does me having a child in a developed country solve the problem of people in underdeveloped countries having too many children? It's a non-sequitur. The only humane solution is for underdeveloped countries to develop, and reach a similar level of education and freedom as we have in developed countries, which we would expect to result in their birthrates falling naturally (and voluntarily) too. How we achieve that, I don't know, but if there's any…

That's your happy moment? Seeing your kid learn the habit of smoking, from you? That sounds gut-wrenchingly horrifying to me.

Sometimes that happens. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes raising children really is just as bad as you feared it would be, or worse, and you regret having them but it's not socially acceptable to say that out loud and it's too late to do things differently. If a person knows themself fairly well, and knows they don't like interacting with children and knows they aren't the caring and nurturing type, why would they take the risk just on the hope that things will be different when it's your own?

If you exclude mental illnesses, addiction, obesity etc... Why would you exclude those things? That's like being alive during 1347 and saying "yeah, but if you exclude the black death, life expectancy isn't falling". All those things you listed are part of the condition of the modern world, and you can't just write them off.

That's true of every single organism that's ever lived on this planet, yet throughout our evolutionary history there have been an enormous number of organisms which did not successfully reproduce. That's true even among species which never went extinct and which as a whole on the species level are still successful to this day. These are the failed and forgotten "leaf nodes" on the evolutionary tree. Focusing on the fact that everyone alive today comes from an unbroken line discounts the fact tha…

The bigger question in my mind is, why do so many women want kids? My entire life I have never understood why anyone would want to have a kid. Seems like an absolutely enormous investment of money, effort, and emotional commitment for only a slim chance of reward.

Overpopulation is a very serious problem. The global population is the highest it's ever been and continues to grow exponentially despite falling birthrates in developed countries. Meanwhile arable farmland is being destroyed by climate change, erosion and pollution. And land is just one of many resources humans need to survive. We're also running short on fresh water and crude oil. Every human born on this planet, especially those people born in wealthy countries, contributes to the consumption…

Lower birth rates are a good thing. People voluntarily having fewer children is the only humane way to address the problem of overpopulation.

Seems like a cop out, man because it's "too hard." It is hard, and that's a perfectly valid, rational, reasonable reason to not want to have them. How is that a "cop out"?

Most men have to have some deep innate drive to have a family, kids, and continue their genetic line. Men that say they don't, I think are lying or maybe psychopaths. I'm a man, and I don't want to have kids at all, and I'm not lying or a psychopath. r/childfree r/antinatalism
