My husband pays 80K per year in alimony with no specific end date in sight. This is to someone with no children, a masters degree, and 15 years of recent work history. He will file a modification when he retires but there is no guarantee it will be granted. If that is the case, we are leaving the country. There is no other way around it. Family law is awful and completely corrupt. Watch Divorce Corp documentary. As his new wife, they can even look at my income to determine his eligibility to pay…

I'll check it out. Can't the courts file to suspend your passport and freeze assets if they are aware you are planning/threatening to leave? I've heard several attorneys say caught men trying to escape. It's awful.

Agreed.

The ex would have to spend a lot of money to hire an attorney in another country, file with their courts, and get them to enforce a US civil lawsuit. It is costly and very time consuming. Regarding the moral piece, he has paid hundreds of thousand of dollars in addition to giving her half of everything at their divorce. He did right by her and still is.... but at some point it has to stop. We would sleep very comfortable at night knowing he did his part and decided to move on from it. Regardless…

Please do your research. Florida is one of the worst states for alimony. LIFETIME alimony. Men have been commiting suicide over this...they can't retire, remarry, they lose everything. Regarding the kids and if they're under 18, the judge can order you be responsible for the regardless since you've been taking care of them. Look up Florida Alimony reform stories. Also, watch divorce corp..here is a clip about alimony: https://youtu.be/RvTkbsCpvwU Goodluck

My husband pays 6125 per month in indefinite spousal support to his ex. Plus 7.25% of anything above 200K. She makes 50K per year from her salary and with alimony it totals 126K. All her kids are grown and out of the house. Crazy system we have. Luckily for him he met me... independent, financially secure, homeowner, and helping him. It is tough to think about the future...when he retires. He will have to file a modification and pray that the judge doesnt make him continue to pay that. Judges ca…

Finish it asap. Be careful with lawyers... they and the judges are in cahoots. See Divorce Corp. You're better off cutting your losses but the sad part is the amount of alimony you're going to get stuck paying forever if it was a long term marriage. In that case, cash out everything and leave the country. Find yourself a nice place to start over. The US won't extradite for civil cases. Your ex would have to spend a ton of money to find you which she probably won't bother doing. Sucks but that is…

It is weird to me that women want to be tethered to a man forever. I've heard them talk about it. My sister and mom have made comments like... oh good he will have to pay. My response is always do you realize the woman will still be "owned" by the man?? Don't you get it? If he loses his job, skips out of the country, dies... what are you going to do you moron?? Sorry to sound so harsh but I really think it is a flawed system that encourages laziness and dependency similar to the welfare system. …

We already did but decided to not pursue anything with a lawyer. Watch Divorce Corp. Good luck with your situation. Just looking to hear how others have handled their situations.

US will only extradite for child support and other crimes. Alimony is considered a civil issue and other countries won't bother. US courts will require her to handle the matter outside of court which would be very costly to her. Family could always come visit us right?

Common law doesn't exist in IL. 😊 But yes I agree - leaving the country is an option.

Correct - same house, separate rooms, no getting it on.

We hope to keep lawyers out of it. They are just as corrupt as the judges in IL. (No offense to anyone). We opted to see a certified divorced financial planner. I hope you do find someone to share your life with. It happened for us later in life after bothing going through difficult relationships. It was well worth the wait ❤. Best of luck to you.

I don't think that is a good idea. She could blow through that lump sum and go crying to the courts that she needs more. You're better off keeping her on a set allowance while you focus on rebuilding your future. There is no expectation for them to prove they are spending the money wisely.

Why do people want to be tied to someone forever??? These women are walking around boasting about how they deserve it blah blah blah but they don't stop to realize that he owns you. OWNS YOU. If he loses his job and can't pay, wtf will you do? Oh..take him to court which will cost you a lot. Then the battle begins. Why would you want to put yourself through that? Move on... let him and the failed marriage go.

Sorry to hear this. Wishing the best for your family. My husband pays his ex 80K in alimony until he retires and files for a reduction...which the judge may or may not approve based on her mood that day. They were married 25 years. His ex has a masters degree and is an assistant principal at a private school. She can make way more money if she wanted to but doesn't and the courts won't make her. They split everything accumulated during the marriage and he is on the alimony hook forever. I would …
