I'm 49 y.o. and I watched both All in the Family (I believe the cheap show from 1974 you speak of) and MWC as they were happening. MF certainly does touch on all of the newer sjw-type themes, but it evicerates every one, usually through Ed O'Neill but just as often through self awareness. There's a lot of gay stuff but it's extremely self aware and done in a teasing and ribbing kind of way. Modern family is a better show and everyone should watch it, but Al and Jay are both great characters! edit: Btw I'm a little older than a lot of you and I used to watch MWC when the episodes were new.
