Well, there was a guy in the store in El Paso, but he was in another part of the store helping people escape out the back. As for Dayton, that was a nightlife area, I'm sure the victims had been drinking. Drinking while carrying is generally frowned upon.

Violent crime of all types has been steadily dropping for 40 years. People are safer now than they've ever been. And when you look at homicides, most are drug or gang related. So as long as you're not associated with either of those your odds drop even further. But, this is the world we live in. If you're afraid, be prepared to defend yourself. This clip (and video) has been around forever, the woman had been fighting with the cops been taken to ground at least once already and was faking being unconscious (possibly seizing even) when she miraculously woke up and made this move. She then proceeded to pretend to be unconscious again. So no, this was not excessive, it's just out of context. Edit: Found the video.
