As has already been said: in countries where it is mandatory, they indoctrinate you to believe that it is a privilege to serve. Here in Brazil there are two modalities: either you serve in a "Tiro de Guerra" which is a "backyard base", in which case it is 2 hours a day and you don't receive anything.
