If this was intended to be a homeless shelter aimed at women, the petition and upset towards it would still exist as homeless people regardless of gender are unwanted due to their association with drugs/crimes. Simply put the petition exists not because it’s a space for men but because it’s a space for the homeless. That’s why I disagree that this is a true men’s rights issue.

In general a woman’s shelter and a homeless shelter are different things. Usually a woman’s shelter is a place for people to go to as a means to escape domestic violence/abuse. So it’s not typically a space for the general homeless population you often see sleeping out on the streets in tents and what not. To be fair I think any news about plans of a new homeless shelter would face backlash as they often due, due to the location. Whenever a homeless shelter is announced there’s always gonna be an uproar about it as people in those areas don’t want to see homeless people, especially around kids. While of course some people supporting it could have specific issues with it being a men’s space, such a petition would still exist without such beliefs/supporters. This is a single study of a 12 month period and is data only from the US. Not really at all enough to conclude something like that. Though it does affirm that male rape victims are a very real thing and that women are capable of rape (which shockingly is something some people apparently choose to deny)
