I gotta say, I really don't identify with the MRM, and I have a lot of problems with it. I also really don't think I'd ever join of these campus groups. But this panel almost made me literally yell at my laptop, and actually saw me root for John Kay somehow. Letting any group that has some level of demand and isn't outright illegal/hate-speech be recognised on campus and book rooms etc shouldn't be a big deal. Disagree with them by all means, but let the friggin group exist.

To be fair there is a distinction to be made there. They didn't want him barred from physically being on campus, just to be denied a platform to address a large audience. It's not an overly important distinction in the context, but it is different.

She's trying to hire candidates that believe in the company's mission and that will mesh well with the working culture. This is not an issue - this is barely even news. If /r/mr is going to criticize feminists for focusing on trivial non-issues than posts like these are pretty damn hypocritical.

Not saying you're wrong, but can you prove that the male and female applicants were equally qualified? Looking through I didn't see anything that compared applicants' qualifications. It seems entirely possible to me that men could be more likely to apply even if they're a longshot.

The whole reason that most 'men's issues' emerged is that we worked on solving problems only for the (perceived) majority of victims. Women were the (perceived) majority victims of domestic abuse and rape, and so all efforts to solve this issues focused on women and ignored male victims entirely. Going forward with solutions that only help male victims will just create the same problem again for different groups.

There's more too: there's no indication that they accounted for the specific crime/circumstances in comparing sentencing and 30% paternity test figure glosses over the fact that you generally only get a test if you're pretty damn sure the kid ain't yours. All in all these are some pretty dishonest stats.

A lot of countries like to keep the option open even if it's never used, just for extreme cases like serial killers. Plus they may well have a system like in Canada where life still allows parole.

Yeah it is annoying, but I do sympathize with the fact that there are a LOT of signs in the city and changing all of them would be quite an undertaking. They really should change them but given the state of a lot of things on the TTC it isn't exactly surprising that this hasn't gotten priority.

These data probably arent very useful at the micro level. For one teacher on one day it may just be that boys acted up more often, or even that the most troublesome students in a class happen to be of one gender.

Honestly I think we do. The fact that women are so underrepresented in many STEM fields indicates that there must be some educational, societal, or institutional force pushing them away. But while doing this we should ALSO be addressing the dwindling number of men in university in general, and the poor performance of boys in secondary school, etc. The key is attacking gender issues from both sides, rather than the BS of encouraging women to enter and just ignoring all problems men have.

They're going on about how the government is supposedly "all men", in a province where the premier (similar to, but significantly more powerful than, an American governor) is a woman (and a gay woman to boot) and a country where half of provinces have female first ministers. Hell, the recent election in Alberta was a race between 2 women. Women have plenty of oppurinity to enter politics in Canada and are very able to hold high office.

In Canada you might be able to. There have been numerous cases where judges have found searches to have been unreasonable and illegal and have reprimanded the police for them, and yet still allow the illegally gathered evidence to be submitted in court.

Gwynne Dyer ( Canadian/British/Newfoundlander journalist/historian) talks quite a bit about the switch from matirachry to patriarchy in this documentary, but unfortunately the youtube version is missing a lot of the intro. The tl;dr of his thesis would be that early hunter gather societies were egalitarian (both politically and between genders) and then village societies were dominated by women, and then early mass civilizations were patriarchal and authoritarian.

Eh, wasn't that long ago in Canada that 14 was the age of consent. It's now 16, and IIRC the age gap allowed it 2 years for those aged 12 or 13 and 5 for those aged 14 or 15.

We really have to move away from this desire to pull everyone else down with us: just because many crimes men are charged with come with absurdly long sentences doesn't mean that all crimes should be punished so draconian. Sometimes we really seem to take a 'crabs in a bucket' type of approach to equality, dragging everyone down to the same shitty level rather than raising ourselves up.

Is it a consent form or a statement acknowledging that she's aware you're doing it? For example, here in Canada when one gets a firearms license the application requires any current or ex spouse to sign stating that they're aware you're buying a gun, but their consent isn't required.

Alimony for a limited period of time following a divorce makes perfect sense - it ensures that a spouse can't be financially extorted into staying in a marriage. Sure, the way it's being implemented is quite ridiculous, but the concept has some validity.
