Yeah I don’t buy the “weak and fragile” counter argument. Who got priority on life boats when ships sunk? Who’s expected to jump in front of bullets or cars?

I think “responsible” goes too far. It’s not leftists that literally created the Manosphere, they’re not funding them, I do think they’ve given the worst of the worst more publicity than they should’ve though (most younger people I know only know the Tates through outrage media). I do agree with most of what you’ve said though. I would rephrase “Moral bullying” as “Unearned sympathy” though, as most of the problem is sympathy for assholes who don’t deserve it.

Look the left isn’t perfect and there’s a lot of different views within it. That said, do you want to hand the keys over the religious nut jobs and war mongers? There are those on the left that are raising the issues of boys and men. The right just mentions it, then starts flirting with a drafting people to go to fight their fossil fuel wars.

I don’t think it’s really been defined as anything too specific. Some seem to use it to refer to toxic podcasters like the Tate brothers, some use it to stigmatise any man with a podcast. The lack of a real definition IMO causes a lot more harm to well meaning individuals. To be fair as well though, scam artists with podcasts SHOULD be stigmatised.

Nothing wrong with supporting women, a lot wrong with discriminating against men.

Misogyny isn’t “hating towards women” it’s “hating femininity”. It happens to men and women, so another example could be insulting a man wearing pink (pinks traditionally a feminine colour).

I think so yes.

Misandry would be if they tried to insult someone for having a large penis (or a penis at all) or being bald or some other “manly” trait. Not being “manly enough” is still misogyny (still bad).

It’s textbook Misogyny. A person isn’t “manly enough” if they’ve got a small penis and therefore valued less. Even if it’s used to try and call out actual bad behaviour, it’s still sexist.

Thanks for numbering your thoughts I’ll address them in order. 1. My view is guided by the nature of the words and what they’re alluding to. Jess Philip’s gave her own opinion (no reference to any actual proposed policy), note I don’t agree with her. Nigel farage, is, on the other hand making an argument for a new policy. Given their polling figures and the almost instant Labour actions regarding leave to remain, after Nigel’s announcement of leave to remain abolishment, it’s easy to see they’re…

Yes, that’s a pretty ignorant thing Jess Philips said. However those ARE just words, are you aware Nigel Farage has been floating the idea of cutting minimum wages? Something that WILL affect young men much more. Farage’s Reform UK attack on the young: austerity revisited

Not saying Labour gives a shit about young men, but, I haven’t heard any actual “bashing” yet. Talking about showing that Netflix show got way more attention than it deserved, personally I couldn’t care less if they showed it. Online bullying was a big part of it and the “Villainization” of young men was done more by influencers reviewers and influencers than the show itself. I think it had some positives in that it’s shown more attention needs to be given to young men’s mental health. In any ca…

Rachel Reeves is quoted as calling it an epidemic in the above link I just shared.. granted it was “loneliness epidemic” the inference is still there.

Are you aware this didn’t start with podcast bros? And the focus on men’s loneliness specifically was something researchers on the topic have brought up. https://www.campaigntoendloneliness.org/wp-content/uploads/Men-spotlight-launch-release-VD-FINAL-2.pdf

I don’t think I’ve heard the right talk about it before TBH, I’ve head “oh feminism ruined everything” and “calling masculinity toxic ruined blah blah blah”, a million times over, but not specifically any adress of the male loneliness epidemic. Do you have any examples? Most of what I’ve heard from the right regarding men is “feminist men are weak blah blah blah”.

Who’s out there saying it’s women’s job to fix the male loneliness epidemic? I’m yet to hear anyone say this. Systemic issues usually have instigators from both genders. Saying it’s solely women’s responsibility is BS but saying they’ve had nothing to do with it is performative at best, if not, just outright malicious.

Great post, so much nuance gets lost when people talk about feminism.

Disagree with some of that, financial incentives aren’t the reason men aren’t in HEAL based careers, it’s social perception. Reeves has a lot of very good points and the acclaim his book went to is a reflection of this. I’ve also never seen him talk about separating genders having boys start school a year later isn’t separating.

Guys, I think we have to just start ignoring this crap. We’ve spent far too long listening to other people’s ideals about who and what we should be. Just be yourself, fuck positive masculinity, fuck toxic masculinity. Be yourself, others might not like it, fuck them.

I think when I hear it, all it’s really saying is “I don’t have any answers but I’m upset and want to blame the easiest people to blame”. I swear there’s some people out there that think young men are meant to solve ALL the world’s problems while they just sit there sipping margaritas in the sun.

William Costello, one of the lead researchers has done a lot of interviews of the last few years, he talks about the overall findings quite well.

Yeah a bit of a Walmart walk, perhaps a better talk around some of the info that goes into incel ideas. I would probably try to put the 80/20 “rule” into a more realistic context (it came from online dating statistics), that’s it’s not “real life”, it only includes a fraction of women and those women it does include won’t necessarily make those same “swipes” in real life as meeting people in person is much different to swiping on tinder. I’d also say people change a lot as they grow up, he shoul…

We’ve got nephews around 13-18 that are chronically online. Boys that age (in my experience) won’t necessarily talk about their problems. It is worrying people are so caught up in the incel stereotypes that they just ignore what the research shows. I think for me I’m particularly worried about the self harm statistics.

I tried to discuss the show and some of the statistics around incels with my sister. I got yelled at for around 15 minutes, I don’t think a lot of woman are ready for research based realistic conversations around incel culture. It’s a shame, the impression I had from the show is there aren’t necessarily going to be obvious warning signs. People need to be aware of what to look for.
