I never been traumatized until I got married.I feel you, my man. After over 20 years of relentless controlling, manipulation, criticism, comparing, shaming, emotional abuse and all things related, I am a shell of who I was, insecure and get maybe 4-5 hours of sleep. The only positive, is I've taken a silent stance to better my life in all ways and never expose myself to such tyranny ever again. You are certainly not alone. | /r/Divorce_Men | 14/07/26 08:17 PM
Alimony for life? Is that a real thing? Is anybody unfortunate enough to be in that group right now?Correct. I should not have married. I was young, uninformed, and believed the world was all roses. The reality is people can be selfish, lazy and opportunistic and should not be rewarded from it, just because they married someone. Too many times I did the full time work, long hours, paid for a nanny only to find out my wife played games all day. If the courts actually examined the contributions of the individuals, then perhaps my opinion would change. However, I firmly believe prenuptial agreeme… | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/06/26 10:11 PM
Not ready for any type of relationshipThe best thing you can do for yourself, is focus on yourself. Relationships require strength, nuturing, time, commitment, patience and a whole lot of other things. 6 months later you are not at that point to handle that. Do not find someone else to save you from the loneliness, boredom or anything else. When you decide to look, do it to enhance your already satisfying life. BUT financially protect yourself before getting into one. | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/06/26 07:32 PM
Alimony for life? Is that a real thing? Is anybody unfortunate enough to be in that group right now?Respectfully, I completely disagree with this point of view. I believe the default judgement should be to award no spousal alimony. The only time I would disagree is if a prenuptial agreement was signed stating that wasn't true. This default judgement to spousal alimony is why most people are not bothering to get married anymore. | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/06/26 07:22 PM
Alimony for life? Is that a real thing? Is anybody unfortunate enough to be in that group right now?If you are married to a vindictive, evil person, who can put on a smile and convince a judge she is somehow a victim of life, there is very little you can do to swing things in your favor. The judge and their bias, along with the quality of the lawyers are the best way for you to "win". But winning rarely looks as good as you would hope. Often times you give up a lot just to cut the alimony cord. I would never give my ex more than I have to, but that doesn't stop her from legally taking it from … | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/06/26 07:12 PM
Alimony for life? Is that a real thing? Is anybody unfortunate enough to be in that group right now? This is what I face. On top of it, I can't even die in peace. I will have to pay for life insurance non-revokable in her benefit. And her medical bills and child support and half of all assets. More than 50% of my income as well plus child sports. And she is an evil human being. If we had a do-over on life I wouldn't marry nor ever live with someone or merge assets/salary or have a joint account at all. Every single human being should keep finances completely separate. | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/06/26 07:04 PM
Welp after over a year, it’s official. I’m divorced. You made it to this point. Be proud of that as this process is so incredibly difficult and ruthless. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/06/26 02:04 PM
Am I crazy to want a divorce?Leave. My wife had serious childhood issues that I ignored/didn't give it much weight, until we had multiple kids and I started becoming the enemy. Initially she pinned all her life problems on her family, but then when I was locked in, I was the entire problem. She has to do the work to want to fight and save the marriage. I wasted more than 20 years of my life and, in the end, I am the enemy | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/06/26 01:56 PM
Men in long term marriages, what holds you back to leave your wife?At first it was the kids, but once they got older it was the money | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/06/26 01:52 PM
I Hate that She Put me Here: Dating in 2026 is HorrendousLevel up. Become confident. Learn how to make life changing money. Fix your mind, body and soul. You’ll never need a dating app again. You’ll need a filter, which you can hire people to do for you. Don’t chase. And be ok with being single. Get a dog, good friends, hobbies and sprinkle in some travel. The world is changing. Entitlement is rampant and it’s always everyone else’s fault. Personally, as a survivor of a toxic marriage, I am 100% ok with never being in a relationship again. | /r/Divorce_Men | 16/05/26 02:49 PM
The people who have hurt me most in life have been womenI’ve got myself convinced that being unmarried and living without your partner is the best life. But also have the mindset that you make yourself happy and cut loose anyone who doesn’t bring the energy you need and want in a partner. We all get this short life and very few are going to care a few years after you are gone. I am so traumatized from my marriage that the thought of dating anyone else makes me very uncomfortable. But I also realize life is so much more than a partner. Good friends, g… | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/05/26 06:31 PM
Paying for DatesMajor, major red flag. Her attitude says it all. As men, we need to stop supporting this attitude/outdated expectation. Don’t let them blame their makeup costs on us. It is the most ridiculous argument I’ve ever heard | /r/Divorce_Men | 31/03/26 11:09 PM
Financial slaveryThey have equations based on a number of factors. You can take it to trial but there is a low likelihood of winning. It can actually be higher than that if she has medical bills etc. and section 7 with children’s sports can also make it higher. Also, I would be required to pay for life insurance to protect her in the event I die. St Lucia does sound nice :) | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 08:44 PM
Financial slaverySame for me. Divorce act is federal with provincial tweaks. Spousal is taxable so it helps, but I cannot live on what remains. I’m going to try the buyout for two reasons. I hopefully avoid spousal support and it forces her to get a job to pay the remaining lowered mortgage amount to which will then reduce my child support further. Walking away from my home and then losing my job tomorrow is a huge risk tho | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 08:41 PM
Financial slaveryYes please, if you have some ideas, let me know. Nothing I’ve thought of is ideal. Everything points to buying her out, and hoping she accepts the offer | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 03:41 PM
Financial slaveryI’m so sorry to hear this, man. This is awful and very much the same as my situation. She did work before that and actually has a degree! I will get her imputed for at least minimum wage but she could fight her way out of even that. My entire wife’s family are system abusers and find ways to not work and collect free money. I am so disgusted by freeloaders. They’ve coasted thru life on other peoples back. My fault for not seeing that when I married her tho. | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 03:39 PM
Financial slaveryThis burns but it’s like gets an early release from prison for a crime you didn’t commit. Mixed feelings but best given my options | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 03:35 PM
Financial slaveryThese are my thoughts. 2 of my kids are now young adults. I would need to establish residency, get a passport in that country and take a huge risk. Also, all my Canadian pension from the government would immediately go to her and I would only ever be able to see my kids again when they come visit me. I wouldn’t know my grandkids etc. it’s not an easy decision and I’m working on other ways to get around it. A buyout is my easiest option and, while expensive, would be a life saver | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 03:33 PM
Financial slaveryI very much agree with this. Make them work a full time job, even if it is at minimum wage. Because im the only one working, im the only one required to work and i cannot intentionally become unemployed. She has the choice | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 12:53 PM
Financial slaveryCanada is nice but alimony plus cost of living means I’ll be homeless. Let’s say I make 120k per year. Once I pay taxes (close to 50%) I’m left with take home 5k per month. Then she gets 70% of $5k meaning 120k salary will leave me with 1500 per month. Average rent where I am is 1900 | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 03:56 AM
Financial slaveryThanks guys. It’s me that wants out. I’m done with the volatility. Worse than crypto. My peace is worth more than constantly moving goalposts and daily disrespect. Leaving the country has actually crossed my mind. I’m thinking about giving her the equity in the home I paid for and did all the work on. It’s hundreds of thousands of dollars in equity but I still don’t know if it will be enough. | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/03/26 12:53 AM
