1	How well does guitar actually work at picking up girls? yes, if you can show that you a unique and sophisticated sense of music, but this obviously will not happen until you have been playing for a few years. But in the meantime, your pursuit of the guitar is going to show girls that you have a passion for music (which you presumably do) and that you are seeking to better yourself.
