It's less that those lives aren't valued and more that "those lives take extra risks which inherently bear greater consequences." Think of it this way: If I'm driving and don't see a motorcyclist (uncommon vehicle and harder to see) and slightly bump them with my sedan, they will likely die. If I make that same mistake and hit another sedan (common vehicle and easier to see), there will most likely be a couple of damaged fenders and cost $300 to repair. Indeed. If not for the lie, I would be far more understanding. Driving while intoxicated under threat from an abuser is reasonable. But this whole story smells fishy. If a person is going to use a defense like this, it should necessarily open a criminal case into the allegations of domestic abuse.

I think it's a bit far to suggest that a 30-something teacher having relations with a 16-year-old boy suggests that she'll be abusive towards her own daughter. Edit: The boy was of the legal age of consent in their jurisdiction.

Based on your comments, I'm guessing you've never had a child die or been close to someone who has. Picture a bad case of postpartum depression, but, you know, far worse because the baby here actually died. She's a 21 year old adult. So about four years shy of reaching adult-level emotional maturity insofar as brain development goes.

Odd; Reading the exact text of the law, a 30-year-old college janitor engaging in a consensual sexual relationship with a 40-year-old who is auditing an art class at that same college would also be guily of a first-degree sexual assault felony. I hate how inconsistent these laws are.

Depending on state law, firing her could result in the required payment of a severance package, allow her the ability to file for unemployment, etc. It's also more of a hassle for the school and leaves the door open for costly (although likely frivolous) wrongfull termination lawsuits. Given, the fact that the school didn't notify the family was almost as dangerous (legally) and highly immoral. This is true. While the man is definitely a victim, he is guilty of following her and assaulting her as she theoretically "retreated." He either needed to immediately restrain or strike her or he needed to let it go and file a police report. Although from some of what I've read in the comments, a Native man filing a police report isn't going to do much.

He didn't lose the case against her. He lost his case in the UK against a "news" publication. This was a libel case, where he attempted to prove that they defamed him by printing stories which they knew were false. He lost, as he probably should have, as he couldn't prove that The Sun knew them to be false. Far worse than even the title implies: She admitted failing to provide her daughter with adequate food, clothing or heating, hitting her, and permitting her to smoke cannabis and drink alcohol.
