right-wing but every indicator was wrong! Don't studies show that people with a higher IQ tend to be left-wing? I'm not in the US, but by my own experience, someone pursuing a (science) doctorate and being right-wing is extremely uncommon; most people I've worked with, either during my studies or in my place of work, were very progressive.

Haha, I just read a news article about this article and wanted to see if anyone discussed it on reddit. I agree with you, it makes no sense. Are only geniuses (IQ > 140) allowed to be significantly above average? And that's the lower end of it. A score of 21-25 should have meant "top 20%", considered it's the top 20% in score.
