I tried adding a romance arc to my fanfic. The hardest part was figuring out why either party should stay invested at all. Sure, they got along well and all, but with everything else going on in the world, it felt as though the main protagonist simply shouldn't be thinking about anyone besides whatever creature he just marked for death.

I remember my dad once told me "women first" originated from the Middle Ages, when a knight thought an area might be a trap, so he sent an unsuspecting female(and those were more common than knights) forward to trigger it. Marriage can only work when there is trust. I guess the real reason would be to finalize and officialize the relationship, so that it is recognized by the law. Probably helps with raising kids and the like. So it does somehow "complete", but it doesn't complete your life, it completes this particular side quest you're currently doing. The best argument for marriage would be "both sides genuinely love one another and want it", but that only happens in fiction. Love has, at most, one side.
