Divorce is the most shitty thing you can go through. It’s never the best thing that can happen to anyone, however it can be better than being stuck in a loveless, hopeless, and crushing relationship. I’ve been divorced 9 years now and it wasn’t until a good 4 years after that I felt “normal” again. I don’t miss her anymore. Don’t miss the lies, the anxiety, or the heartache. If I was still married, I’d be constantly looking over my shoulder to see if she’s cheating or selling me lies. It’s not t…

The only way to do this successfully is 100% no-contact. No talking, no social media, nothing. You definitely need to think of yourself only here. As hard as it may sound, ya gotta cut her loose totally. Nothing but a memory.

It’s been about 7 years since mine. First 3 years, I thought about her constantly, but it started to lessen by the 4th year. Now it’s just every so often and it goes as quickly as it started. The drama that she did in the end is what keeps me from romanticizing the past. If she pops in my head, I just remember the horror she put me through.

Step Six - cut her 100% out of your life.

Im in the same boat as you. I’ve got a brain stem tumor that’s left me disabled, lost my job of 15 years because I physically couldn’t do the work anymore, and financially destroyed from the high cost of care. Plus the wife left for another man. 1. File for SSDI immediately. It’s a lengthy process so the quicker you start, the quicker you can start receiving funds. 2. Apply for medicade. This will greatly aid in health costs. 3. Apply for part time at home jobs. This will keep you from going ove…

I love this idea. I was “lucky” that our finances were pretty straightforward and that we lived in a no-fault divorce state. Maybe something that links to divorce procedures for the state you live in, a way to put in financial assets that need to be split, or anything that would allow the user to gain some idea of what needs to happen and how to do it. Anything that can help you navigate a divorce without the need to get a lawyer involved. Is that what you’re looking at creating?

Definitely get the STD test. One of the first things I did when I found out the ex was cheating on me.

This. If there’s activity in the house, get cams set up if you can. But record, gather, and document whatever proof you can.

Did she just drop this on you? Like, she’s drunk right now and said this? If you truly believe she’s having an affair, file everything. If you have joint banking accounts or phone service, get logs of all transactions and phone use. My ex wife’s affair was all over our joint accounts. Her having an affair and the fact you’re what sounds like a stay-at-home dad, alimony is something you can hang over her head. It’d be no different if the roles were switched.

Word. That very thing happened to me. My ex started dating the guy she cheated on me with during our separation and divorce. One year later I get a text saying she “wanted a way back to us.” Nope. My only thoughts were : she wants me to help her get over the guy she got with to get over me. Don’t be that guy. Hold your head up and say “FUCK THIS SHIT” and walk away from her. For you and your daughter, you got to be your own best friend and protect yourself. Hang in there and know that you’re not…

If it’s amicable and you live in a state that has no-fault divorce, you can get the divorce without getting a lawyer involved. I had a similar situation as you - no kids, no major shared assets, no shared debt. If there’s nothing to really fight over, you both agree on the splitting of assets, there’s really no need to get a lawyer involved. I used LegalZoom and the only time I was in a courtroom was to hear the judge make it officially done.

Definitely better in the end. The last two years of the marriage, separation and divorce were the worst in my life. The heartbreak and the shocking drama was almost too much to endure. Just getting that behind me was a huge relief. Feelings will remain for a bit, and the new life will be a bit scary, but the new freedom is incredible. One day, it will hit you - you didn’t think about her for once. Explore your new world, there ARE better times ahead.

I’m going to second this. There’s no bad guy in this if you’re truly unhappy in the marriage. It’s all about how you handle the situation. You both obviously need to discuss how you feel and your desire to end the marriage. Just be honest and kind. This is going to cost you money no matter what, either by continuing in the marriage or by spousal support, but your unhappiness costs you more.

Freedom is exactly what it is. Free of the drama, the sadness, and the heartache. It’s been 7 years since my divorce, and while the early days are tough, you’ll begin to realize how much happier you are and the new possibilities that await you. You’ll be wiser and stronger for it as well. Hang in there. It gets better, I promise.

All the best and I hope this works out amicably for you. It’s going to take some time and there’s certainly going to be bumps in the road, especially emotional ones. Also, remember to also figure in any taxes you’ll jointly owe after fiscal year of your divorce. Even after the divorce was official, I still had to deal with the ex to pay what we owed to the IRS.

There was no spousal support in my case. Our financial situation was pretty simple (no investments or savings to split) and since I bought my condo years prior to getting married, the property was only in my name. Household items were split on who owned what, the only thing I refused to give up was our dog. As for alimony, look at what the cap is for WA. I live in Texas, which has a cap of $5k a month or 20% of monthly income. It really depends on the situation of the couple and the State they l…

I used LegalZoom for my divorce, which was fairly quick and easy (the paperwork part, not the split). Just make sure you’re in a no-fault divorce state, otherwise you will have to get a lawyer. The cost was $300 for the paperwork, another $300 for court fees. Keep in mind some States have a mandatory waiting period between filing and the actual divorce. (In my case it was 60 days.)
