Again though, those are characteristics that lie on the extreme of a behavioral pattern. Narcissism, love for one's self in lesser forms would be self confidence, or a good self image. Egotism could be described the same way. They're both gender neutral, yet they're only negatively associated with masculinity when at the extreme. There's a reason for that. It's because if you take traditional/stereotypical masculine behavior, and take it to a harmful extreme, you get narcissism, and egoism, and …

Of course they're not limited to masculinity. But they're attributes of one particular kind of masculinity. Masculinity is not the same thing as toxic masculinity. My comment to about the Civil War was not about masculinity. It was about a system where one group of people buys into the idea that it's okay to oppress another group of people, even though it doesn't personally benefit them (and actually hurts them.)

"Read more carefully" does not mean "Your entire viewpoint is wrong". Part of the problem here is that this post is talking about one little part of one person's view of masculinity, and on top of that they're writing for an audience of people who are largely non-heteosexual, non-cissexual (and probably not too many cis men), and who don't truck with traditional gender roles. If you don't fall into any of those groups, and if you're not familiar with people who are, then large parts of this post…

I have heard toxic masculinity defined, but not in a way that isn't a tautology. Toxic masculinity is bad masculinity.... using the same term to define itself isn't causal, nor does it a good definition. A better word than "bad" is probably "harmful"; that's still a tautology so I'll explain further. Toxic masculinity is the kind that is defined through putting oneself in a position superior to others – I was going to put that it's defined "through conquest" but that term has connotations that d…

I don't think you read this post very carefully. This blogger isn't not saying that masculinity is the worst thing ever. They're saying that there are a lot of things about traditional/stereotypical masculinity which are very unpleasant. And yeah dude, that's exactly how rape culture perpetuates itself – through jokes. The more acceptable it is to joke about something serious, the less serious it appears to be – one of the worst examples of this is jokes about prison rape. Jokes about "dropping …

It was relevant. Fuck trigger warnings. Deal with it like a man in mens rights. Because men don't need trigger warnings? Do you think that we're never victims of sexual abuse, or that we shouldn't let it bother us just because we're men and we're supposed to not have feelings? What are you doing in a forum called "Men's Rights" if you think those things?

Why does it surprise you that this was found on r/feminisms? Most feminists I know would be in total agreement with the stuff in this article, especially the part about parental leave.

an out gay manager is a more "feminist" choice than a straight male manager? As a gay guy, I can tell you that this is not necessarily the case. Some of the most awful sexist bile I've heard has come from other gay men – I think it's some kind of misguided attempt to prove their masculinity. If these particular guys had more sense they'd realize that they're not doing us any favors with that crap.

I think you're misreading that article. The problem isn't that "making movies for boys and girls is sexist". It's that the people at Disney are doing nothing more than abandoning one set of gender stereotypes for another set – they're assuming that boys would never be interested in a movie with a strong female protagonist (unless she's presented in a sexualized way a la Lara Croft.) They're assuming that guys just think with their dicks. This should bother you.

Another example: I was mugged once in the shitty part of town. I had not been able to score some weed for two days and I got desperate. When I called the cops, they basically laughed at me. "You had no business being in this part of town at night, you had it coming." Now, if it is socially acceptable for those cops to basically blame me for getting mugged, surely it is acceptable to expect women to take a bit of responsibility in their own safety. That's really fucking unprofessional of them. Ye…

Also: What makes it even more confusing is the number of times women claim that flirting doesn't mean anything and they are 'just flirts' or like to flirt with guys for the fun and excitement of it all. There are men that do this, too; the whole "pickup artist/seduction community" is pretty much based on the idea of flirting with and seducing women just because it's fun. The goal might be to get sex at the end, but I find it really hard to believe that guys in the "seduction community" aren't en…

When are boys ever taught these social cues and what the fuck is it with women thinking men should read their fucking minds. The trouble is that boys and girls are taught a lot of things that make communication really difficult. How many times have you heard people tell little kids that "s/he's only teasing you because s/he secretly likes you"? Now, maybe this is true of some little kids – but in hindsight as an adult, it seems pretty messed-up to tell a little kid that being mean to someone is …
