The production budget is ~50-60% what they actually spent when you consider the costs of marketing, printing promotional material, etc. The studio doesn't even get all the money from ticket sales. And nobody buys/rents DVD's anymore. They sold no action figures or anything else. A movie that breaks even is considered a flop, since you just wasted resources that could've been used to make something actually profitable. Hence the reboot is getting no sequel.
Dead baby jokes are funny because they aren't real. If somebody showed you pictures of dead babies while telling the joke, it wouldn't be funny. This is a real man with a real problem, and he got laughed at.
