It's because we aren't entitled to someone else's love and companionship, and desperation means you are seeking it at all costs - and seeking it at all costs means you are willing to lower yourself for it. Hold your head high. What I mean is that you shouldn't compromise what is right for companionship. Before trying seeking love from someone, you have to learn to love yourself.
