Individualism has been the predominant school of thinking about personal progress for decades. For men, they are told that in order to feel less lonely, isolated, without purpose or role, they need to work on themselves Well that's the key to the whole problem, isn't it? Other groups aren't treated like that. They get to have their issues treated as society-wide problems. But if you start with the assumption that men are "privileged" then any problem must be their own fault.

not all republicans are MAGA That's barely true. The entire Republican party has centered itself around Trump and purged anyone who isn't loyal enough. Hell, we watched everyone who was vocally opposed to him become hardcore supporters.

None of this is new. It's called populism. The central trait of a populist movement is having a large, vaguely defined enemy, that is the cause of all societal ills (and your problems specifically), that "the people" (your side is always the true representative of "the people") and then entering in a state of "permanent struggle" against that enemy so you can cosplay at being the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars. These movements can never have realistic goals that you can actually achieve, because …

But when it's a man or boy having those same issues. "Men just need to be better. Teach men to see women as more equals. It's men's fault why they're so lonely" and stuff of that nature It's because, let's face it, most progressives (center to left) have been starting from the assumption that their ideology is absolutely right and no criticism is ever in good faith. That's why they default to mockery or deplatforming rather than arguing. And when you're the dominant ideology, you can do that... …

What I find disgusting is framing of it as "they don't even know what feminism is". It's literally gaslighting. The "argument" here is "all the beliefs and people you think you disagree with don't exist, because they aren't in this one-line definition, so you must be making them up. Therefore there is no possible debate". You want to defend feminism? Fine, but don't try to argue "I must be right by definition". That is never good faith.

People don't post stuff like this because they want to "blackpill" short men, they post this because they feel like it shows something they've perceived but which everyone around them has denied. This is what drives people to extremism. If you're short or you can't date or your life sucks in some aspect for some other reason, the least you expect is to hear "yeah that sucks, sorry". But when the response you hear is "OMG stfu incel, men DON'T have it tough, you're a misogynist for even thinking …

I think you're onto something. Male stereotypes are very hierarchical. There's always winners and losers or good guys and bad guys and a lot of effort into showing that the losers deserve to be losers.

A lot of leftists are right about some social issues purely because they happened to be raised in a culture that had those beliefs to begin with. I.e. someone who is not raised in a homophobic environment does not deserve credit for not being homophobic and is not necessarily a better person in any other way. And righteous outrage is the most dangerous outrage. If you can convince a group that they can attack another group as much as they want and feel good about it, they will never want to go b…

"Men are simple creatures", we can be just as complicated as the best of them. At some point that's just bigotry, isn't it? If you actually think that men don't have (complex) feelings, then there's not much else we can do for you. One that surprised a lot of women I've dated: most guys almost never get random compliments. So when someone says 'nice shirt' or 'you look good,' we remember it for years like it was an award ceremony. Probably the biggest real disconnect. Not only do women get lots …

But remember, there are still good women out there to date. A good woman will not use her female privilege against you. So don't walk away from marriage. (I'm looking at you, MGTOW.) The dividing line between good groups and bad groups is, I think, whether they become radicalized against women in general or embrace some kind of "payback fantasy". Remember, you should argue against beliefs, not people.

It's true that to feminists, it won't make a difference how much you try to distance yourself from redpillers. This, admittedly, is what caused those spaces to be so relevant to begin with (if you shame all the moderates out of existence, only the extremists will remain). However, to anyone that was willing to listen to you in the first place, it can and will make a difference in the long term. You have to sell yourself in the way you want to be seen as, not the way your opponents define you.

To be blunt, it's in the name, isn't it? Feminism is a movement by women to advance women's interests. It named itself after that and even named its opponent ("patriarchy") after men. It's fine to advocate for a group, but the whole "actually it's about equality and defends men's rights too" is basically gaslighting.

No that's the fun part, they've been pretty open about this. The article is, ironically, a woman openly struggling to understand how a man could be happy without being a provider. Attempting to "teach them" how to "adapt" to this.

The article almost reaches a good conclusion. Pretty illuminating in an unintentional way. It starts with the obvious thing that society isn't forcing people into relationships anymore, meaning people have to like each other to be in one. The author is shocked with her experience of one man liking positive attention from her one time, and how she and a group of other women in the comments struggled to understand this strange phenomenon. It feels a lot like how the right wing treats immigration. Just boosting the shit out of every single time an immigrant commits a crime, 24 hours a day, warning of the end of "western civilization" if we don't deport all of them "just in case". It's a flimsy justification that allows them to just build up dangerous levels of hatred.

Use it as motivation to pursue effective change. Most people will already think this kind of response is bad, it's just not socially common to say it, so there's no discourse about the consequences this has and no reputation impact for those places. The average redditor has 20 different words to call someone a neckbeard and knows about "toxic masculinity" and has probably read a few articles explaining "manspreading", but does not have a word for this kind of generalization. When incels voice this frustration, women interpret it as them saying "I was nice to you, so you have to have sex with me". Which is obviously a manipulative reframing to smear the intentions and moral character of the person critizising them in an attempt to shut down the argument. It also relies on reframing intimacy as some kind of luxury that only a very entitled person would even think about, as if it's not a fundamental part of life. There's a lot of emphasis about how sex or relationships…

A lot of responses, but surprisingly no one mentions "hyperagency/hypoagency bias", IMO the biggest flaw with present day feminism and the source of most of its other problems. It essentially means treating male problems as something derived from their own actions or ideas, while treating women's problems as caused by society or the environment. However, I don't know how amenable this is to debate since it's more about a general attitude. I also don't have any sources or even know if it has any …

My feeling is there was a big shift in sentiment in liberal circles after Trump won again. It seems they got the idea that "dang, we're in actual danger if we don't start winning elections" so there's less tolerance for virtue signalling, alienating random demographics and other nonsense. Better late than never, I guess.

It really seems like most feminist fallacies boil down to male hyperagency. If something is bad for women, it must be because men push it. If something is bad for men, it must also be because men push it. And if women ever push it, it's "internalized misogyny" (i.e. still derived from men).

Like "incel", it's kind of a motte-and-bailey fallacy in a word. You can claim you're criticizing one specific, small group that no one would want to defend, and then simply switch to using the same word to refer to a much wider group, effectively applying the criticism to everyone.

It is a bit shocking when you think about how much of western feminism is centered around containing the "damage" caused by men being horny: "objectification", "male gaze", all the way to shaming "creeps" and "incels". It's basically the original sin from which all harm to women comes.

The belief that there is an "epidemic" of violence against women, when we statistically live in the safest era in history, is a very dangerous idea that will be used to justify any measures to stop it. Women are actually getting radicalized after being constantly told on social media that any time they are alone they will get attacked by a man. It's the feminist version of the "immigrant invasion" that conservatives are so scared about.

Feminism is a populist movement, and like all populist movements it relies on the idea that a specific group is "in charge" and therefore to blame for all problems. To support this idea, you have to see that group as a unit working for the interests of the group. If you see them as individuals with conflicting goals, that entire logic collapses (same works with "the elites", etc). This is why most uses of "the patriarchy" seem nonsensical if you don't have that mentality.

I think the key phrase is in the article is Misogyny is not a disease you can cure, nor an abstract “influence” as described in the policy A lot of activists seem to almost act like "Patriarchy" is something that is measured in one dimension, i.e. as a needle moving purely between "more patriarchy" and "less patriarchy", like an unseen force that just pervades the atmosphere, and just don't engage with specific beliefs and how they spread. And of course, a related problem is that every kid in th…

Oh yeah, the female prison abolitionist movement in the UK is pretty insane. The male role is to be "successful". All the expectations are tied to that: work hard, have a career, have interesting hobbies, dress well, be confident, impress women, pay for her meal. And this is basically the root of the problem: being a "mediocre male" is seen not as deserving sympathy, like anyone else would, but as a moral failure. That is why progressives make fun of the concept of "helping men": it's the same as the right wing mentality of "you shouldn't help poor people because if they…

We want to be clear that this episode is not about "bashing men," but to show how as men and women both fall behind economically and in education, men are more likely to receive an outsized amount of attention. And, how as men are increasingly thinking of themselves and talked about as the victims of society, women are put in the position of being the caretakers of men. It seems like a natural consequence of the fact that women are getting radicalized on the internet fast. While the media puts a lot of focus on MAGA, red pill, and other right wing male-associated movements, statistics show young women have moved a lot more to the left than men have moved to the right. And female-dominated spaces face a lot less scrutiny for saying bad things about men than any other space would about any other demographic. This all stems from the massive bias that women are "no…

Every ideology has the same problems, even if the ideology was founded on a valid belief. It's basically human nature that any movement will, for lack of a better word, circlejerk themselves into extremism. This is why all beliefs need criticism, even the good ones. The problem is that feminism has gained a socially sacred position where you're not really allowed to argue with it.

It fits well as a populist movement. Which is roughly defined as: a group of people being angry at another group of people and blaming them for all their problems (with the anger generally being self-sustaining regardless of the actions of the other group).

It's also a pretty straightforward way to reinforce women's societal power to getekeep which men are good and which are bad. A man who did not pass the filter must simply be one of the bad ones and he should probably be shamed into working harder.

Exactly, you're not going to get an intensely hateful person to change their mind and apologize by just telling them politely. The strategy to fight extremism is to appeal to the "normies" aka the people who are not that far gone. Argue anyway, not to change their minds, but to reassure any outsiders reading the conversation that this isn't normal Try to convince others that those places are bad (reputation is important) Create alternative spaces for people to leave those

Sitcoms are filled with men who are either dumb, assholes, or losers (think Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Moe Szyslak, Comic Book Guy, George Costanza) and practically no female equivalents. The only ones I can think if is Patty and Selma, and now Elle in Family Guy. Well, losers are funny, and I'm guessing people just complained if you made them women, but didn't if you make them men, so that was the path of least resistance.

The discourse on "male issues" in left-liberal spaces is always focused on "we need positive masculine role models", because they only see the problem as "men aren't doing their job well enough and we need to teach them". I'm not sure if they actually understand that the criticism is in that gender role to begin with.

The entire nofap and anti-porn sentiment feels pretty alien to me. I think porn can clearly be unhealthy escapism from real life, like video games, but watching a gangbang scene does not generally make me expect that my girlfriend will want to do the same, just like how watching a ninja movie does not make me expect all Japanese people to be deadly warriors.

The root problem is the hard oppressor/oppressed view they have. It forces you to place someone on top and someone at the bottom. The fundamental cognitive bias in liberal/progressive communities is to treat problems experienced by [white] men as personal problems, and problems experienced by any other group as societal problems. Man have a negative experience doing something? Well, they should do this and that to remedy it. Women have a negative experience? It's evidence of unfairness and should be remedied. Maybe it's just my bias but I feel like the most accurate write-ups of men's problems I've seen have been from women. On a separate note, the concept of "internalised misogyny" is based on a distinction between misogyny coming from men and women, basically implying that misogyny is something that originates from men, and only incidentally adopted by some women, which is not how beliefs work at all, given that our culture is (mostly) shared.

A bit stereotypical, but it's pretty good overall. It is a male-dominated hobby, and it's just as good as any other to start. Call it virtue signalling if you want (it is), but IMO just having a government openly endorse this (and defend it) is more important than the details.

Thank you for this write-up. As you said, the basic problem is simply a pretty strong bias in how men are treated as more responsible for their own well-being and problems, and are far more likely to be treated as a culprit rather than a victim. It's really not hard to see how it manifests in various places, if you're willing. It's just a constant uphill fight where you're expected to "prove it" or "defend" every instance because people really don't like that idea, and automatically see you as t…
