This might sound a little odd... but when I was having trouble in the past, I would put my eyes out of focus looking past them. You don't feel the awkwardness I'm guessing you feel now but they still see it as eye contact (I would actually get complimented on it a decent amount).

"Sorry" - should be reserved for a time you did something wrong and are trying to make amends. "Excuse me", "No problem", etc. are a lot more appropriate for the context you're describing. It makes you sound weak, and probably annoying, to apologize for no reason.

Every once in a while, I fail "what's my name" test... usually after a long night. Does anyone have any good recovery techniques? Every time I've failed it's brought the conversation to an abrupt halt.
