i'm a graduate in geoscience, and i know for fact that new grads in these fields are far more skilled and knowledgeable than new graduates were in my dad's generation. Kind of inherent for all science fields, considering advances in research, knowledge, and technology. About the only thing still the same is the Saturn V is still the most powerful rocket ever.

TIL. Father was Staff Sergeant. Not being able to spell sergeant is odd for having served. But I'm not wrong. The people I have met were idiots who joined because they had no guidance in life. I'm not saying they were idiots for joining. It's just an option for people who have no where else to turn. Silly to think that all the best possible soldiers are currently serving. If there was a draft, they'd get to pick and choose the best possible. Not the best of the ones who walk through the door.

I guess it just depends on the unit. My father was selected to be a Ranger and a LRRP because of the fact he was an orphan super athlete. If there was a draft then a lot of the people who are currently serving probably wouldn't be. Most everyone I've known to serve in the past decade was an idiot who joined the service because they had nothing else going for them.
