But as for the pivotal survey that made its way into society as that 1 in 3 figure, there are tons of problems with it, the most reprehensible of which is the sampling method: among other sampling mistakes, it was sent to tens of thousands of college students by email with a self-selection of participation. I teach quant research and use the “one third of all college girls will be sexually assaulted” stat as an example of horrifyingly flawed methodology that gets promulgated in society to further an agenda.
