It's not only men who think that, women do so, too, because it absolutely is pseudoscience and superstition.

That's fair, if it's an immediate psychological crisis and the person is aware about the faults of the systems and plans on weaning off of it eventually, I think I can see how this is helpful.

I understand the appeal, but I'm still not in favor of it. Just because something provides quick comfort and coping mechanisms doesn't mean it should be promoted. I understand that it is very human to adapt those believe systems, but this kind of coping mechanism is incredibly fragile since it actively contradicts scientific principles. The moment the person is confronted with the real world that just does not work like astrology teaches, this believe system either implodes, rendering someone wh…

Well said, good points. Really surprised about how serious some people in this thread seem to take this stuff.

No, and I did not imply that they have to. But they contribute to advancing my skillset and me professionally, which I also listed above. Edit: Or my understanding of the world.

You are right, it is highly subjective what a "gain" is for everyone. Perhaps I'm too career oriented and don't see anything as worthwhile that doesn't help me to advance career wise, improve me as a professional or my science or humanity as a whole. But I recognize that astrology can be comforting for people, since it's easy to get into, gives an easy narrative to current problems and is mostly spiritual/meditative. What I meant was that instead of getting into astrology, you could use your tim…

My bad, I did not mean just any intuition, I meant Scientific intuition*. And yes, anyone who takes astrology serious and treats it as sth more than just some fun, but ridiculous entertainment or even tries to apply it to make predictions, categorize persons or make decisions does absolutely not have any understanding of critical scientific principles and therefore does not have accurate observational skills and critical thinking. Being open minded is fine, as long as you operate within mostly e…

Absolutely. We should not make this into a men vs women problem, because astrology is nothing more than a belief system that only a subset of people believe in. It is more of an scientific facts vs religion-like belief problem. And I, like many other women with scientific understanding, scientific intuition or just better observational skills, fundamentally refuse to defend astrology as anything of substance. EDIT: for clarification

I'm female and being also a scientist, I despise it, as harsh as it sounds. That it's fundamentally illogical and not based on science goes without saying, but more importantly it is a huge marketing scheme that profits of the escapism of its target group and builds an alternative, religion-like, reality in which women (and men) are lured and isolated from the rest of the world. You gain nothing from it (except perhaps pretty jewelery), you don't learn any skills from it that allow you to progre…

Same here. Except I don't have a social life outside of the lab, haha.

This is good advice. When I'm in scientific discussions I see old, influential male scientist do this very often, where upon interruption they will just not bother to listen to the interruptee at all and just resume or repeat where they stopped, finishing their thoughts and ignoring whatever they were interrupted with. Female scientists tend to either just give up, call it out immediately or try to fight the interruptee off by talking over them. The latter two work too though, most are decent en…

I'm still surprised that biology research is full of men in the US. In Europe it seems to be majority female, so I was very surprised when I came to the US and found myself to be the only woman in the lab. However, respect to you. The quality of PhD student is most easily recognized by the amount of (smart) work and time they consistently put into their projects. I recommend to also get some training in science communication. I see it way too often that some men seem to advance into higher posit…

Oh Wow, I'm going to apply to PhD programs for bioengineering this winter. Love the idea of engineering nature/microorganisms/tissue to be a tool to solve problems humanity faces/will face. Do you have any recommendations/advice for the application process? I'm from Europe, and applying for a PhD position is a whole another story here.

Learn multiple instruments yourself, become a professor yourself. Depending on your background it might be hard to achieve both, but you can be either of those, too. As someone who is frequently among high achievers, this is really basic stuff. You can reach higher than that. What are your big thinking dreams? Do you want to be exciting and talented yourself or just be known as the spouse of someone with those properties? You are only 20. You are still supposed to learn, go to uni/schooling and …

Top tier list. The ability to delay instant gratification (aka self control), plan ahead and set reasonable priorities (the SO being one of them), have high self esteem and good self care and act based on moral standards and reasoning and not due to fear of social repercussions, or blindly following societal standards, as well as intellectual curiosity are perhaps the most important traits in a man. Well, actually any person really.

Well call me nitpicky, but having the toilet seat down, or even better closed, should be the standard. It's not a public toilet.

No thanks, I need that energy and time to prosper myself. I want to help advance humanity and reach my goals. I have no nerve to additionally take care of bad behaviors and attitudes towards me.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
