You can't avoid men or women for your entire life, but you should be able to if you've just been abused enough to leave your home and seek shelter. We're talking about immediate temporary shelters, not long-term housing support groups. I would imagine it would be nice to know that you're in an environment with people who know where you're coming from and what it takes to seek that kind of shelter.
