This kind of divorce messes with your head precisely because it doesn’t fit the story we’re taught. There’s no big event you can point to and say ‘that’s when it ended’. No explosion. Just a slow quiet drift. A lot of people grow up thinking divorce only happens when something goes wrong. Cheating. Abuse. Constant fighting. So when it happens without those things, it can feel illegitimate somehow. Like you’re not allowed to be upset, or not allowed to feel relieved either. From what you describe…

You’re on day five. That matters. Nothing about this is supposed to make sense yet. Right now you’re being asked, emotionally, to do something impossible. Of course you can’t imagine ‘just giving it all up’. You didn’t stop loving her. You didn’t stop being a father. The life you’re talking about isn’t abstract, it’s your home, your routines, your kids’ ages, the car you just bought. It’s still very real to you. I think one of the hardest things in this phase is that people talk as if there’s so…

Yeah, this kind of thing messes with your head more than the big obvious stuff. Because on the surface it’s ‘not that bad’, but it leaves you feeling quietly undermined. From what you’ve written, I’d be careful about deciding that every situation is alienation. Not because you’re wrong to notice it, but because that line of thinking can spiral and put you on edge with your kid in a way he doesn’t need. At the same time, you’re not crazy for clocking the tone. Comments like that do carry an impli…

I don’t think there’s a ‘right thing’ here, and that took me a long time to accept. As parents we endure a lot for our kids. That part is real. But number one still has to be number one. If you run yourself into the ground financially or emotionally, you don’t end up being more present long term. You just end up depleted. You can act with integrity and still protect yourself. Those two aren’t opposites. It’s also worth holding in mind that some of what you’re doing may never be rewarded in the w…

I wouldn’t go. That might sound blunt, but from what you’ve written, going feels like you trying to endure something rather than actually being present for your son. Kids pick up on that more than we like to admit. You’re not avoiding him. You’re avoiding a situation that’s stacked against you emotionally. There’s a difference. You’ve already done birthdays your own way before, and it sounds like those meant something. A one-to-one day with you where you’re relaxed, engaged, and not quietly coun…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
