You're a charmer, you are.

I'll have to research when I get some time. At the moment, I don't have anything other than the conversations I have had with the folks I know who are social workers in my city.

None in my city, which sucks.

That really highlights the problems with chronic homelessness among individuals (as opposed to family homelessness). There is so much drug abuse and mental illness. Prison is, obviously, not a great place for them. There needs to be more social support and services for long-term mental health and substance abuse problems. For many/most of these folks, homelessness is not their major problem; in fact, it's a side effect of the real problem(s).

Too bad there aren't also Men Only shelters. Oh, wait, there are.

Agreed! It sounds like you have found a niche to use your organizational talents and get the P.O.P. truck started.

Actually, I disagree. I think that the default should be 50/50 legal and physical custody, with little or no child support between the parents. When I divorced, we had to write our own divorce papers to state that, since the state's default of "mom has custody, dad gets every other weekend plus Wednesdays" didn't work for us. Fortunately, my ex-husband and I are both mature, rational adults and we could suck it up and give our children the best from both parents.

Woman here. I think it's hugely unfair to the man. Divorce law in general needs a complete overhaul.

The headline doesn't really match the article (shocking, I know). The article says this: It's not clear how common this type of abuse is, Espey said. Really, it's a heads-up to doctors to screen for possible abuse, including a type they may not have thought about before. Seems pretty rational to me.

Thank you for answering that. You've definitely given me some stuff to mull over.

Interesting take. Why do you find venting to be as valuable as more action-focused activism? (I suppose this could apply to any topic, really, not just MR.)

I don't buy the connection between feminist advances and consumerism.

I'll try. The core legal issues certainly make me want to take more action.

Men can go through life thinking what they see on TV is the way things work, Do men actually do this? (Honest, non-sarcastic question.) If I heard of or read that a women did that, I would call her naive and try to educate her a bit.

What you think I am attempting is untrue. Therefore, I cannot answer your question.

Here's what I really ought to say: I give a shit about Mens Rights - for my brothers, for my son. I don't want my own child, in 15 or 20 years, to deal with the legal bullshit that men deal with now. Divorce law is crap. Rape law is crap. Hell, even the way elementary school is structured works against boys - and it really frustrates me. So to see so much of this subreddit dedicated to complaining about interpersonal relationships is disheartening. With all this energy focused on dating and what…

Wow, what a way to make assumptions about my words. Angry much?
/r/MensRights19/01/13 06:53 PM

Ahhhhh. This may explain my confusion over this subreddit. I very much support mens rights in the legal sense (especially divorce law - men totally get screwed) and I want to love this sub, but I see it more as "bitch about feminists and women in general". I'll keep trying to give it love, though, gentlemen.

This is a Men's Rights issue?
/r/MensRights19/01/13 11:48 AM

I was thinking it was for gay men based on the type of men showcased - I.e. all pretty boys. And the About page doesn't really specify who the creators are, like I expected. Confusion all around.

less time-consuming, less expensive and easier on both couples and children Fantastic for all (except perhaps lawyers)!

Gah, your story sounds horrible. And I hate hate hate how the court system does little to support the fathers. (Also, this makes me want to tell my ex, "You think I'm a bitch? I'm awesome compared to these other loser ex-wives.")
/r/MensRights28/11/12 03:22 PM

On the other hand there is some criticism about the focus of our activism. Some say we are too caught up in fighting bigoted feminists, trying to make mothers look bad by highlighting these stories which I think has influenced our reputation as anti-women rather than strictly pro-male and that we should rather be advocating men's rights in a more neutral, impersonal and levelheaded manner (more "professionally" if you will). That we should be doing constructive activism instead of bitching about…

So this would be a pro-MRA article then, right?
/r/MensRights28/11/12 02:55 PM

I don't think this article reflects that, though. In fact, I see it as a pro-Mens Rights situation, since the woman didn't get a light sentence.

It sounds like the jury made a sound decision. Since I'm relatively new to MRA, can someone explain to me how this is a Men's Rights issue, as opposed to "bitch is flat out crazy"?

Providing financial support to educate single parents would be far better for society as a whole. Pump in $x now, instead of supporting the family via government social programs over the next 18ish years.

I don't have much advice, but I feel for you. This is where men really do get screwed. I hate our legal system with regards to parenting and custody.
/r/MensRights24/10/12 05:18 AM

Yes! It's the system that's screwed up and where you (OP) should be taking action on your anger.
/r/MensRights18/10/12 12:37 PM

I think the legal system within the state is the best place to enforce this lack of father-child interaction. The default should be 50/50 time with each parent, not a couple days a month with dad.

Here's how to make it easier on men people: Ask before you kiss, hug, touch, etc. How is this such a difficult issue?
/r/MensRights15/10/12 07:18 PM

I disagree. One can ask spontaneously. And each person's idea of fun is different (not being assaulted is pretty fun to me).

When it comes time to plan a family, a man is not allowed to say “enough is enough” or “we can’t afford it” or “I’m not sure I can be as good a Father if I spread myself too thin” lest he be labeled an insensitive clod. Wrong, wrong, wrong. When a man says that, a rational person (man or woman) says, "Those are some understandable limits. Let's talk about this some more and come to a mutually agreeable solution." Otherwise, one is just married to a rude, self-centered individual. Rude and self-c…

Shit like this makes me embarrassed for being a woman.
/r/MensRights21/09/12 02:57 AM

This, exactly! It's not based upon how much money it takes to raise a child, but instead what percentage of each parent's income goes to raising the child.

This just makes me sad for your situation, whatever it may be.

As a single mother, this (society's attitude, not the study) burns me up. Single fathers are just as competent! In fact, some of the single fathers I know are far more competent than their child's mother. Grrrrr.

OP, I wonder if you just get annoyed with non-thinking people in general. I, too, am a feminist. And a masculinist (is that a word? Firefox says no.). I'm pro-individuals, according to their needs. I hate doing things just because of tradition - to me, that's a horrible reason to do ANYTHING. But I imagine that people just use that excuse because they don't want to think. Non-thinking people are a waste of space, I think. Argh!!!

Interesting comment. My best friend has far less money than I do, so I often just pay for both of us. No biggie. If I didn't, she wouldn't be able to go and I really like her company. I must use that rationale, too, on dating. More often than not, I try to pay. I fight with the man on who gets to pay. Thankfully, dating women is easier - there's less bravado. One of us pays, or we go dutch, or whatever. No having to fight over it.

He shouldn't be forced to because he got divorced. He should be forced to because he's ridiculously wealthy. Katie is, too; she doesn't need his money.

sigh Again with the media being sensationalist. That headline barely matched the info in the article. I'm a feminist and I think she's getting too much money. Seriously. Every person (man or woman) who has a child should be financially prepared to raise that child by themselves. If they get help from the other parent, all the better. And child support for 2 people who were filthy rich even before they got together? Silly. Unnecessary. I have a better idea - Tom Cruise pays 32K to 64 mothers in p…

I think it just comes down to differing personal experiences. I will admit that I'm too much of an optimist regarding other people, thinking they are nicer than they are. I will concede that you are right. And I just live in naive lala land. :)

I think the rest of society would also see her as an asshole. The media would not, but people in general would.

when women do the exact same thing to men, it's deemed perfectly acceptable or "within their right as women". I disagree. When women do the exact same thing to men, they are shallow assholes, too. The woman in the OP sounds like a really shallow bitch.

The old grandpa guys I seem to run into everywhere. ;) Objectifying strippers makes sense to me - that is their job, their service. Objectifying cheerleaders is kind of gross, as they are typically still legal children.
