Rape is not a typical situation, and should be considered separately. Rape is the reason for only 1% of abortions. I'm talking about consensual sex, or using abortion as if it was contraceptive. There are a lot of options: The pill, injectable contraceptives (depo-provera), cervical rings, IUD, fallopian screws, tubal ligation, hysterectomy, condoms, foams, withdrawal, abstinence. All of which have their risks and well known effectiveness.

I think that it was high time that abortion get a review. In the early '70s (when Roe v Wade was established) there were not a lot of good contraceptives available, the pill being the best, but still required a lot of hoop jumping with doctors who would not prescribe it and carried a negative connotation with it, so women on the pill were looked down upon -- it was a shameful thing to be on the pill, so many didn't take up that avenue of contraception.
