This is a part of my concern. I need to think about the difference between having boundaries and being hold, hostile and coming across as not wanting a relationship. I do think he may feel like I have brushed off his attempts to have a serious conversation. The thing is, I am potentially interested in being in a committed relationship, but feel that five months is too soon for sharing any really deep emotional stuff. Anyone can put in effort and come across as safe and sane for five months, He h…

I appreciate your response. I guess this is what I was trying to ask as well. I am not sure how to have a discussion about issues in a healthy way. In my past relationship, I over-communicated (following our couples therapist’s advice) and made a clown out of myself. I am never, ever going to couples therapy again, but that’s another story. I have an aversion to the idea of ”communicating“ about issues, but that can’t be healthy. It’s only been five months, so we don’t have any issues that requi…

He has been open with me and shared some personal stuff, but nothing too deep. He is generally comfortable with his feelings. Unlike myself. Many replied mirrored what you wrote: Five months is not a very long time. I really appreciate your response. Now I don’t have to sit here and worry that I’m paranoid and over-cautious. I like the attitude of waiting for him to show me that he’s safe. If anything, him saying what he did has made me take a step back... and come running here.

Thank you. I too made a mistake of revealing too much in a past relationship. I agree that it’s probably best to wait util marriage and just keep watching him. I tend not to like having these types of discussions anyway. I would rather that the two of us have fun and enjoy one another’s company. I’m an academic and already spend too much time thinking. I see my time with him as a break from my analytic side and enjoy going out and doing stuff. Right now, I don’t know if it’s going to last, so tr…

And yes. He has told me some personal stuff. Nothing too heavy. He is generally emotionally open and comfortable with his feelings whereas, as I’m sure you can see, I‘m not. Mostly because I try not to be an idiot. It’s a a yellow flag at the very least. Thank you for confirming what I was already thinking. At this point, it looks like it might be time for me to slow things down and Just wait and see if this is potentially more than a yellow flag.

Thank you! I worry that I am paranoid and overcautious, but I too think that 5 months is not a very long time. Certainly not enough to let my guard down. I love the answer you suggested. It’s a very “dumb fox” move, which is very much my style Of course I am not going to tell him “no... I’m not really blah blah blah....” Your suggestion is a classy way of moving things right along.

Yep. That’s my stance also. I can’t see sharing my trauma with a man— ever. Then I start second guessing myself. I knew I would get good advice here.

That‘s my sense too. I wanted a second opinion as I tend to, well, to put it rather bluntly, allow my hatred for men to color my decisions.

I am kind of worried about that... and I was weirded out by it also. I’m very good at keeping my eyes open and my mouth shut. I get the sense that he’s not sure what to make of me.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
