They're not easily granted, I'd go as far as to say they have a meeting once a month to find ways to deny them. They keep asking for forms that don't exist (such as an "updated" fee waiver from the court for a case that's been ongoing for several years) and their replies take around two weeks - asking for more forms (or the same ones that were sent last month).

Not a lawyer but alimony is almost never for life anymore. The intended purpose is to use the money to go back to college and get on their feet. Example, Florida repealed lifetime in 2023. My grandfather was paying my grandmother for a very long time, more than 20 years (NJ), but he hired a lawyer because she wasn't using the money for anything meaningful and it went away. Says here that NJ made it so alimony can not exceed the length of marriage. So, it depends what state you're in.
