1	The moment you think you are eventually going to get a divorce, etc, go and buy a fucking tape recorder. Generally, in my state, it's 1/2 the length of the marriage. It can be more or less at the judge's discretion based on mitigating circumstances. My ex is faking a disability to claim she cannot work because it means more alimony (aka indentured servitude) from me. She told me flat out she would do this. I've reported her statement. 5	Just need to vent Actually, I'm pretty sure I would up and leave if she was awarded lifetime alimony. My plan, exactly. In this state, quitting my job does nothing. The courts determine my income based off my "historical earning potential". Therefore, my only recourse if she gets the award she's seeking is to leave this country. Since there's no children involved, it's only a misdemeanor (non-extraditable) offense to not pay her. My particular employment skill set is internationally desired. I feel what's looming over my head is nothing short of indentured servitude - I should not be responsible for her. SHE should be responsible for her and hers. 3	Just need to vent You're speaking of the "10 year rule". It does exist, but as precedent instead of codified law, but it doesn't apply to my situation. The marriage is measured by the courts from the day of consummation ("I Do's" + officiator signing paperwork) and the day of separation (the day the court of record stamps the dissolution/separation paperwork into record). 11	Just need to vent I feel your pain. I've been legally separated in California for over 18 months because she's dragging out the divorce... Wanna know why she's dragging it out? I'll tell ya.
