The day you get married in England you essentially transfer ownership of ALL your assets in the hands of some judge who only considers needs. That could mean "need" for mortgage free house in London. I seriously don't understand how wealthy people get married in England.

http://terry.uk/divorce-advice-for-men/ This is an unbiased lawyer who is not particularly on the side of men. It's truly the most insane place. London is the divorce capital of the world for a reason. Prenups do not hold. The US is really OK in comparison. In the UK typically you lose even most of your premarital assets. Needs trump everything. And those needs are extremely generously assessed for the wife. It usually is total utter financial Armageddon. Only OK to marry if the wife is much ric…

Marriage made make a rational man actually end a relationship earlier than he otherwise would. Seeing the first issues one cam project that this won't last for a lifetime, so best to end it early to avoid the massive financial repercussions. Insane.

HAHA UK is the WORST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO GET MARRIED for a men. Or say the financially stronger party. It is truly astonishing.

I have been given an ultimatum to get married or break up and said No to marriage. I just didn't feel that the contract I was supposed to be signing was fair to me.

I did try that. Cohabitation Agreement etc. But nothing worked but legal marriage which doesn't provide protection for me at all

My main issue is that the contract that marriage is in this jurisdiction (divorce calculator says after 10 years she would get 70% of assets that only I brought in) is just so unfair. That even if I would be on the same page in general in life the contract is so unfair I just can't sign it

They are not that substantial that a trust is worth it and from my understanding not even trusts are safe in England. There is absolutely no way to protect them. It is just crazy how unfair the contract is to the higher earner financially stronger party. I think most people are not aware the full extent of it until they get divorced.

I tried that, multiple times. they dont give good answers, essentialluy everything insecure and prenup may not hold after children. I just cant deal with this stress and uncertainty. The rules in UK are messed up. I am quite desperate

thanks for the story, I admit I came here to make me feel better about my decision. The contract as the high earner/wealthier is just absolutely one sided in the UK. I can not make a happy face about it at a wedding and feel I have been pressured into it. But its a very tough decision, she is a great person

Marriage is a value etc that she can't compromise on. I did offer to share finances going forward, but I could not go through with the marriage as I was terrified of the potential devastating consequences. We have lived together and I think she was a good person. But knowing the UK law I just could not get myself to be excited about marriage anymore.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
