I'd also like to know why it's a concern if it's considered normal? It's not only westerners writing about, and studying "hikikomoris", so I don't exactly see what your point is. And, having some alone time is good for your health, however spending months at a time in your room/in solitude is not. I know first hand part of the reason someone may become hikikomori is they dont feel a place in society and are fearful of the real world so they shut themselves out.
