Something that I think is misunderstood about the story, is that Fight Club isn't about the excess of masculinity. It is about men in a society that is blatanty counter to healthy masculinity. When they finally do assert themselves they do so in the most destructive way possible. The character played by Bonham Carter in the film is what happens when a women grows up with no influence of healthy masculinity, the same way the narrator grew up.

I think the proper way to measure time over the development of a society is through generations. I would be very surprised if my generation (late millennial) were to solve the problems we face. It's kinda an apples to oranges comparison. The Soviet Union was totalitarian, there were many examples of peaceful protests being crushed with overwhelming violence. The people didn't get a say in the nation's policy when they disagreed. The government of a country with free speech always has to be wary of it's own populace, as it should be.

I didn't say they deserved respect. I said I can have empathy. Some of these guys might confront their situation and be better men. I think the extra funding is a big element of it. More importantly though, I think that in times of conflict, people are united in a single goal. As someone who works outside, a high quality pair of polarized sunglasses is the best quality of life purchase I have ever made. We experience the world around us visually. By putting some cheap plastic between your eyes and everything else, you do yourself a disservice. Specifically with sunglasses, op's outlook seems completely backwards. Buy a $150 pair and take care of them. It will cost less than buying a new $15 pair every week.

I find that some of my favorite music, has just outright terrible messages. Sometimes in direct opposition to my personal values. The point is that it has limited guidance, it isn't going to travel 50 miles. So it doesn't need to be overengineered. The biggest thing is the cost. Of course it will get better over time, but as a working prototype I think it's a pretty great start.
