I summarized as my post was already quite long. I still have a relationship with the 3 guys and still consider them my closest friends. The point is that not many with a wife, children and career has the time or energy to support anyone but those dependent on them. I can see a negative connotation related to me saying bar rats and alcoholics. But these same people held down high-paying high risk a professional jobs. And only drank on there off hours. I had a big friend group 5-10 years ago , there were 3 guys I could always count on to emotionally support me like you described. We were all around 25 and in party mode, we were bar rats(alcoholics) single most of the time or meeting women for one night stands or short relationships.
