A little late, but thanks for this. Very useful, and I will follow through.

You don't even have to stop communicating or keep secrets. We talked about everything and went to a couple of different counselors (and each had our own individual ones). We changed, we both grew (but in different directions) that were no longer compatible with who we were in our late 20s. An affair on her part didn't help, but even then we tried to fix things. We are still friends... sort of? We used to go out a lot with friends, and host dinner parties, she loved to cook elaborate dinners. We …

From experience, an affair is really hard to bounce back from. There is a key component that gets shattered. I will always love my ex, but I could never go back

Thanks for that. I really do hope she grows and finds healing. I am not sure I really have anything to apologize for as I tried so hard for so ling (though was far from perfect). Years of individual and couples counseling could not resolve our issues.

Yeah, I think one of the things about BPD (and/or NPD) is the inability to own up to mistakes. The emotional toll is too much for them. On the other hand, the first way of 'shutting down' the conversation (when we were still trying), was for her to say, "Yeah, I know, I suck." And she really believed that about herself. As my therapist once said, 'she was the piece of shit the world revolved around.' I want nothing more for her to find the peace and happiness she so desperately seeks and I adm…

Thanks for that. Yeah, I hope she is healing little by little. It will be three years and I still miss the 'good times' and her wonderful family tremendously. I haven't really 'apologized' per se because I don't think i did anything wrong other than to take care of myself. We tried for years, various counselors (individual and couples), and eventually I figured out she would never be happy no matter how much I tried. She knew (and stated) she could never be fully appreciative of everything I did…

More good advice, not taken lightly. Thank you.

Wow. Powerful and sobering advice. I really do feel like I did the best I could for a long time. I just wish she had more of a support network (her family is 4 states away, though her brother is in town). We are doing a mediated separation agreement, but I didn't think of changing my credit cards --- she doesn't seem like she would try to screw me that way (she's already waived spousal support in the SA). You're right about my involvement causing confusion. That's a hard break to make. I'll cut …

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
