Thanks for posting this. If women weren't socially pressured into doing makeup from a young age, would most women really choose makeup as their hobby? Something to spend time and money on over the course of their entire life? Part of a morning routine/something you do before a night out? I really think most women are kidding themselves if they say yes, makeup is my hobby and even if beauty standards/marketing of makeup to women did not exist, I would still do it. We all have an appreciation for …

I love this post. I started getting into the habit of doomscrolling when the pandemic started. There was so much uncertainty and I reacted by overloading myself with scrolling through tons of news articles. I realized that I was starting my day negatively - looking at my phone for half an hour or more trying to gauge what was going on. Then when I felt upset with reality, I tried distracting myself with superficial entertainment (TV, TikTok, etc). It's an extremely difficult habit to break. I st…

I'm saying women should be asking for more but I am not blaming women at all for the pay gap. We shouldn't need to ask for more - they should be paying and promoting us as they would an equally competent man right out of the gate. Reality is that doesn't happen and we have to advocate for ourselves more to get to the same starting line, even when society hates on career women and women who want to make bank.

Men are way more likely to have engaged in crime and abused drugs, 2 big factors for homelessness. Women are less visibly homeless because it's extremely unsafe to be a homeless woman. You're at risk of rape especially from homeless men, and it's not safe to camp where there are homeless men/go to shelters where there are extremely abusive homeless men. Your top priority is making yourself scarce and invisible to men. Homeless women are almost always targeted for sex trafficking too, so they usu…

Reminds me of the time I negotiated my starting salary (fresh out of university.) They had already offered me a low 6 figures but I honestly was expecting more from the company because it was known for paying well. Told my mom, she told me not to be greedy. Bet she never told that to her husband/my dad 🙄 Asking for more pay from a large corporation that is going to make way more money off of you is not greedy. Men are more likely to be offered more money right at the start, are more likely to su…

Signs of misogyny: being at a higher risk of violence or harassment from men, because you are a women. Employment discrimination, pay discrimination, reproductive rights discrimination. Signs of misandry: women won't have sex with me 😔

Sorry to disappoint. You can look up the relationship between Silicon Valley and tech and SF. In the past perhaps 15 years, the city has totally changed from being a super interesting, diverse place that was on par with NYC, to a tech bro wasteland. Anyone who isn't tech or didn't own before the tech boom is getting priced out of the Bay. I still love SF but the people who made it cool are gone.

Lol, as a woman in tech I hate SF men so much. The men work out and have cash but they so one-dimensional and annoying once you get to know them. A lot of them are also way into gaming which is a massive turn-off to me.

True, while I met one guy I liked in London, I did see a lot of nasty men. They're in full form right now after the European championship. Drunk men absolutely trashing the city. Sometimes I think American women are a bit blinded by misconceptions about British men being more refined. They should spend a few hours listening to pub conversations. I've had more success close to the universities. I spent time at/near a few large European universities and I felt like there were more interesting, mor…

I would say chose a city that you like first and foremost. The male/female ratio doesn't necessarily have the impact you would think. I lived in SF for a while, which has a huge tech bro/venture capitalist population. While the ratio is skewed so that men outnumber women, the quality of men is not great. The tech bros/entrepreneur types were self-absorbed, often one-dimensional, and unable to hold a conversation about anything other than tech news/the stock market/Bitcoin etc. They make bank and…

Some things I would like to see in more media strong female friendships women who aren't afraid of failure and being disliked. We are trained from birth to please others. I'd love to see that subverted and for a leading woman to put herself first putting in hard work to accomplish a goal. Not everything comes easily or naturally women who aren't attractive. Our attractiveness and appeal to others doesn't determine our worth women who help other women women who are comfortable in solitude. Being …

feeling inspired by these comments :) I started and almost finished the wood-working project that I had been putting off due to lack of confidence in my abilities and uncertainty about the cost of the supplies. Now I have matching furniture for the long term instead of my worn Ikea stuff :) I'm extremely proud of myself because this is my biggest project so far and it's something I've wanted for a long time. I had some of the pieces for a while but I finally pushed myself to get the rest of the …

My parents immigrated to the US a long time ago. Honestly, I have been urging divorce because I am able to take care of her, and I know our American family on her side, especially the younger generation, would support her too. My father's abusive tendencies are pretty obvious and my mother is the person who maintains all our social and familial ties. The issue is mainly that my father controls the income and finances and many of the men in the extended family leaned on him for immigration and ca…

100% agree. I know lots of people think that the low divorce rate among Indian people indicates happy marriages. From my experience, it indicates that Indian women are not able to leave the marriage due to: social ostracization of divorced women, lack of financial independence, children being removed from the mother's care, and normalization of spousal abuse. My mother has been married for 20+ years. It's not because of love - she is afraid to leave. Her education and upbringing means that she c…

places where polygamy are practiced tend to have so many young brides married off to old dudes who already have wives. There are no limits to the depravity of men when iT'S LeGaL to control a girl. And when the men die before the women, the widows end up being destitute because they have to rely on the generosity of male relatives in a patriarchal society, and widowed women (but not men) are not considered marriageable.

^ highly doubt these men of God would be happy with women having multiple husbands. It's about patriarchy and power.

Men will claim to be a FWB but without actually being your friend. He's a friend if he: cares for you, supports you when times are tough, respects your boundaries, hangs out with you in public and with other people, and is able to interact with you without a sexual context. If he's just coming over to Netflix and chill, he's not your friend. He's just getting benefits.

He asked me what my hobbies were. I said hiking, biking, exploring the city, reading. He said my hobbies were boring. His hobbies were partying and having sex (yes he actually claimed those were hobbies.) Telling a girl she's boring is a great way to endear her to you. Didn't talk to him again. Guy in my hobby group of maybe 30 people. He saw me eating ice cream with my friends in the city. He waved, I waved, we did not exchange words and it was a very quick street interaction. He got my number …

I do have low expectations of men thanks to my father's example. But this means that I rarely date, and if I do, I date a man who is kind, unselfish, caring, pulls his weight, not offended or angered at perceived slights, and not sexist, unlike my father.

Men really think they can solve institutional sexism by getting women to pay for their dates. Let's start with: violence and sexism that women have to face since childhood, pay gaps, reproductive rights and lesser quality of healthcare, the impact of birthing on a woman's body and career, emotional labor and the second shift, beauty standards...shall I continue? I'll happily pay for every single date as soon as I have the same quality of life as a man. HAPPILY. How much you wanna bet the man in …

Socialized paralysis. So many times, I've wanted to give a pervert a hard time. Honestly, it's harder when there are other people judging you for making a big deal out of it. If I'm being harassed without witnesses, I don't have qualms about being the crazy screaming person. When other people are around, I'm worried that they'll think I'm the crazy person, instead of the pervert. The way the other people reacted at the bar was awful. At least one of them should have had your back.

I'm in tech and every time a male colleague mentions reading something on Reddit I cringe. Women who were in my engineering class: normal women who happen to be interested in engineering Men who were in my engineering class: scum of the earth, spent an insane amount of time gaming/using reddit, zero social skills or interests outside of tech, didn't bother taking care of their bodies or dressing well, creeped on any and all women in the class. Maybe there were acceptable straight men in my class…

Oh my god, one time I was visiting my family for vacation and helping my father troubleshoot something on the family computer. I was going through the installed apps to see if my siblings had downloaded spammy game apps and I noticed he had a packet sniffer installed...didn't give me a good reason why. I know he doesn't need it for his work. I wouldn't have recognized what it was had I not taken some cyber sec coursework several years ago. In most general home Wifi setups (and most stores that o…

I feel comfortable enough to have a reddit account because this sub is woman-only. I have lots of hobbies which have associated subreddits but I was lurking for years because I just didn't feel ready to participate. When I did participate in a sub I liked once, I got unsolicited DMs from creepy dudes. Male voices and the male gaze are so dominant on many subs. We need to protect and continue to create women-only/woman-dominant spaces in the world, on and offline. I got into my current career wit…

Why do men expect women to be their personal therapists and punching bags? I always see posts on Reddit about how men need support, need to be able to cry, etc, and there's always whining about how women need to help them realize emotions are okay. If men weren't so toxic to each other, maybe they'd be happier. Why aren't more men setting up domestic abuse shelters for men instead of pressuring us into having all-gender shelters? Why aren't more men reaching out to their friends and family, help…

I was recently looking at a pay comparison board for my company. Median salary for an entry-level software engineer in London was $150k. Bay Area, California is $230K (this is all including bonus and stock). UK also taxes a bit more. London is super expensive and tech workers don't significantly out-earn other professions like they do in the US. That being said, even as a high earner in the US, I save aggressively. I choose living in a nice, slightly out-of-the-way studio over the high-rise apar…

I feel like I could have written this except I'm several years older. My experience in high school was being totally written off by boys. I definitely fell into the nerdy, skinny Indian girl trope. Both white and Indian boys seemed to dislike me. I realize in hindsight that it was because I was "too smart" - aka i didn't fluff boy's egos and was easily the top performer in my class, and that combination put off boys from seeing me at all. However, i cultivated strong friendships with other girls…
