I think both methods are valid. But often better when used together. If you just solve a problem that made you extremely upset and don't express the emotions it made you feel that's unhealthy for most people. you should express them and talk/work them out in a healthy and or constructive way and solve it. The idea of there being a stigma against dating someone who was a victim of abuse is inherently disgusting to me.
