Is WW2 there was only one case. Most times it was a slap on the back, get court marshalled and stay on prison for some years. After some time the US felt pressure because most people didn't believe that the punishment was bad, so they shot a random guy who told his officer that he was deserting. My father died when I was 12 he died while he was showing to the hospital. In the house he literally did nothing h was incapable of doing basic things, even if he was in good condition. My mom always felt that he was worthless because he could do things right. I she says that when she worked at a restaurant, she at her finger till the bone, and the only thing she could do was continue working because she needed the money to raise me.
